Royal Caribbean Cruises has alleged the Indiana grandfather who dropped his granddaughter from the 11th story of the Freedom of the Seas ship knew the window was open, citing surveillance video that shows him holding the 1-year-old outside for more than 30 seconds before she plunged to her death.
Toddler Chloe Wiegand was playing with her grandfather, Salvatore Anello, in the Kids Water Zone aboard the cruise ship on July 8 when she fell from an open window onto the concrete Pan American Deck in Puerto Rico.
Anello, who is facing charges in her death, has repeatedly denied knowing the window was open instead claiming that he picked up his granddaughter so she could bang on the glass as she would often do at her older brothers hockey games.
The family sued Royal Caribbean in wake of the tragedy, claiming it failed to protect Chloe and other passengers from their potentially dangerous windows. In response, the cruise slammed Anello as reckless and irresponsible in new documents seeking to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit, according to the Indy Channel.
This is not a case of an unknowing child approaching an open window and falling out because the window was defective or improperly positioned, the court documents read.

Wow!! I remember this story. Sounded like a tragic accident. I have to read more on this.
His last name is my middle name.
But I’m not crazy like him!
no comments on that last line please.
According to the Comey/Cankles precedent, grandpa didn’t INTEND to drop her, therefore Royal Caribbean is at fault.
This is horrible. Was alcohol involved?
I have been following this.
It looks like the guy was playing with the kid and held her out the window as a joke. The child panicked and squirmed out of his grip.
It is tragic and more so because of the guy’s lack of honesty.
It’s impossible for any of us to know for sure with information we have.
This makes it seem like he was playing some sick Michael Jackson game, dangling her from a window before she was dropped.
But if what he’s saying is true he could have been holding on to her for dear life for thirty seconds before he lost his grip.
I don’t know.
Tragic. I wonder if he was also lying to the child’s parents about what he actually did?
What a Horrifying video to watch! With so many people around!
Wow.
Normal people don’t hold a kid out of a window.
I have a great nephew. I wouldn’t do that for a second!
And you are right. The lack of honesty was terrible.
Yes, a 1-year old is gonna have fun. Yes, the adults are going to eat it up.
But in the end, she won’t remember any of it as she ages.
So kids tend to be brought along for the enjoyment of ... adults.
Sad ending.
He doesn’t yell or help!?!?
Grandpa was tired of the kid and hove her out the window.
Parents, don’t pawn off your kids on people who lack patience.
And why take a cruise with toddlers?
“He doesnt yell [f]or help!?!?”
I don’t know. That’s my point. Not enough info.
Where is the video. That link is so full of crap that I don’t want. I cannot see where to run the video.
But now, suing them? That takes an incredible amount of nerve, and it does look like from the photos that he was leaning out of it earlier and knew it was open.
Well people are really close and would have heard him I think.
But you’re right. I wasn’t there.
what a freaking disaster.
Oh God how do parents survive such things.
I know sometimes it’s hard to even get the page to load.
but the video is at the top.
I thought he was alone with her in a room.
He’s with other people.
The toddler was perfectly safe until her grandfather held her out of the open window and dropped her to her death.
I remember this story too. Now it seems the grandfather was just a jerk and like a democrat wants to blame everyone but himself. I’d be willing to bet Trump is not his president.
It’s horrible. A nightmare.
If he did it on purpose he’s a monster.
