According to the ADSB transponder data he was following the 101 Fwy to Thousand Oaks. Then suddenly turned and dropped rapidly. Last data point shows he was dropping at 4,000 FPM which is pretty extreme...
Although approved it’s kinda dumb not to have another deck officer in that craft, too much going on for one person IMHO.
You hit a solid object at 45mph on a motorcycle.....and you are dead.
Yes - but pilot only has seconds to get into auto-rotate.
My son is a Navy helo pilot. In some choppers, time to get into auto-rotate is a second or less.
At 4,000 ft/min. decent, chopper was not in auto-rotate.......also they need forward speed to “flare” before landing, slowing decent significantly.......may not have had enough altitude to have any forward airspeed........
This is correct - blades reversing direction is false.
Clutch between engine and blades must be dis-engaged so blades can rotate from speed of air passing through them.
Then the rotating blades become sort of like a poor version of wings that the copter can sort of (not really) glide under.........they don’t provide lift, but reduce the rate of fall.....

Not sure but if the chopper actually went down that fast I’m definitely leaning towards mechanical failure. The NTSB Crew will get to the bottom of the problem(s).
I read somewhere on FR that someone mentioned that the Engine(s) were making weird noises. Bad Fuel possibly?

In SoCal the news has been covering the crash non-stop since 10am yesterday.
There are no reports of a sputtering engine or any other sort of engine trouble. Witnesses in Calabasas include a pilot. This was a twin engine helicopter that could fly on one engine if it had to.
This will be declared a controlled flight into terrain accident. The pilot was at 1085 feet and he never saw the 1700 foot hill he flew into. The lesson is don’t fly in low clouds and heavy fog because you can’t see. Just that simple.

Kobe Bryant did a lot of good in the last years of his life. This is also between Kobe and God.

There was a time I really didn’t like Kobe. On some political issues, I still don’t - but maybe he’s just misinformed. Either way, now I am sad for his family and friends, and sad wondering what more he could have accomplished.
I’ve wondering since Sunday, “what was the OAT the last time the pilot set the altimeter before Sunday,... 70... 75? And what was it in the overcast mid-morning air,.. 55... 60? Did he forget to set it before flying that day? Would that have been the difference in clearing the top of the mountain in the fog?”
Over 35 yrs ago my dad flew a Cessna Conquest twin turbine for a business, single pilot, in all sorts of conditions. But, by that time, he probably had 6 or 7k hrs in twin Cessnas. He always said the best compliment of his flying skills came from the future CEO of Hardees, Jack Laughery, about 1974: “Ben doesn’t get in an airplane to fly it. He puts it on like a sport coat, and just wears it.”
As I’m sure you are aware, hours aloft as PIC is only one measurement of skills. Some folks get the ratings, and experience, but are still scary to watch fly an aircraft, because it just never becomes natural to them.
He said he was lost and I bet he suffered from SD - didn’t rely on his instruments and I bet that craft had a glass panel.
Well, I looked the pics of it when it belonged to the state of IL. It was old school at the time of the photos. But I wondered if it had been upgraded. I have no idea how an altimeter is set in on a glass panel.
If it was old school, and was off a few hundred feet, it’s possible that he didn’t even look at it until he was in the clouds.
But yeah, SD is a killer. :(
The changes in direction cause changes of the sound of the engines and rotors. That may be the sound variations that folks on the ground were hearing.
Especially the sound bouncing off the canyon walls plus the craft being in the fog/clouds and they couldn’t see it.
