A ‘water pill’ used to reduce swelling could combat autism, experts claim. New research has revealed that a prescription drug, known as bumetanide, can also improve the symptoms of the developmental disability by boosting signals between neurons....

….Bumetanide is a type of medicine called a diuretic which is available in the UK and the US and enables patients with cardiovascular, liver or kidney disease to produce more urine and rid the body of surplus fluid and salt. Diuretics are sometimes called “water pills/tablets” because they make you pee more. However, a study has shown that in autistic children it helps nerve cells communicate by correcting an imbalance between...

IF this study is correct somebody needs to buy the patent on this and jack the price up 2000%. Like they did with that inhaler thingie. Actually several people should have went to jail over that in a perfect world.

not to worry.

It is probably made in China, and nothing Made in China is going to be accessable for a bit.

“Like they did with that inhaler thingie.”

I use Rx Combivent Respimat 20-100 MCG, which retails for close to $500 at all drugstores. After Geisinger Gold & Medicare are done, I pay $81 co-pay. What a scam.

it’s available as a generic, so probably no money to be made on this one because more than one co is manufacturing it.

I hear you on the inhalers. Buy Canada - three months w/shipping for less than one month stateside (current law allows up to 3mo supply to be imported - might be six now?). And I don’t feel guilty in the slightest as I drive right past those highway robbers Walgreens and RiteAid and the rest on the way to the post office to pick up my little Canadian Post package.

It's legal (but shouldn't be but Congress sold us out) for one company to PAY another company not to manufacture a drug off patent.

Ugh. Why publish a news article without a link to an open access paper?

Symptom improvement in children with autism spectrum disorder following bumetanide administration is associated with decreased GABA/glutamate ratios

Furosemide is even cheaper, I believe. I can get it for $4 per 30 or $10 per 90 day supply as a generic, no coverage required. I'm supposed to be taking it (x1) daily and really need to get back on track with it due to edema and BP issues. The one drawback to prescription diuretics is, for the first four hours or so, when nature calls, it calls quickly and loudly. If it's used in conjunction with certain Type II diabetes medications like Farxiga, you may initially only get about 30 seconds' notice between 'the urge' and loss of bladder control. It is embarrassing.

Should other things that make you need to pee also be helpful? How about caffeinated beverages?

All that stuff is, Nasal Spray and Albuterol mixed, the problem is getting the nasal spray inhalable as it is thick, they must be using a dilution agent to get the mix right, but I bet a compound pharmacy could mix you up some.

I bet the cost this way is about $80 but for a lot more, but it cuts everyone out of the picture.

You just have to find a aerosol compounding pharmacy

I used a GoodRx coupon, which brought my copay down from $104 to the $81 I now pay. I know of one compounding pharmacy here in York (PA), but they don’t do aerosols. I’ll have to do some searching.

I don’t think so. Read the article for why, but there’s a specific ingredient in this rx that acts a certain way on the brain neurons.
