This is what's being discussed in Chinese on WeChat right now.

1. There is a virology institute in Wuhan.
2. This facility does have a P-4 laboratory; P-4 is the level of protection necessary for handling viruses that could cause fatal pandemics.
3. At least one of the research projects at this facility involves coronovirus.
4. At least one of the research directions being pursued at this facility involves genetically modifying coronavirus particles to jump between species, although they are only admitting to success in getting it to cross between bats and mice.
5. The director of this facility, with the P-4 lab, is a 31-year-old woman with zero management background.
6. She has published a total of 11 papers, every one of the as a co-author with her husband, who is also a virologist.
7. Her husband is 15 years older than she.
8. Her husband is the President of Wuhan University.
9. The 31-year-old director got her PhD from Wuhan Univeristy.

Add in a growing rebellious sub-culture who might be willing to even unleash a bioweapon as a tool to disrupt Chinese authority and expose the ineptness of Chinese leaders.

And by the way, I still don’t have enough information to guess as to whether the cause was a lab error or natural, coincidental occurrence. Maybe we’ll eventually find out. Either way, I’m sure that measures will be taken by the Chinese government and other governments against re-occurrence in the future.

Chinese people on WeChat are actually saying that the idea that laboratory animals infected with the virus got out into the food festival and eaten is not too far-fetched.

This very idea was joked about here on Free Republic back on Sunday.

That’s been my theory all along. Never ascribe to malice that which can be ascribed to incompetence (or greed).
