(CNN) Tired of washing your hands for 20 seconds each time? Fingers starting to prune or feel like sandpaper?
Please dont stop.
The world is counting on you to help stop the spread of Covid-19, the deadly new disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
Take heart that while youre scrubbing, youre also killing off a host of other nasty bacteria and potentially lethal viruses that have plagued humans for centuries including influenza and a number of different coronaviruses.
There are four coronaviruses that circulate in humans regularly, almost every year, said virologist Dr. John Williams, chief of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh.
And they mainly cause colds; in fact, they cause about a third of common colds. They dont kill people, he added.
Coronaviruses arent the only nasty parasites that succumb to a vigorous application of soap and water. Influenza which kills millions around the world each year and the human metapneumovirus, which causes a respiratory infection that can lead to pneumonia, also break down and die.

Alcohol was intended to be used as medicine from the inside out. Always believed in that.
Hand sanitizers are for girly men. Always believed in that
Gin and Quinine water anyone? Had my first one yesterday, not bad
No, it’s not you...I’m so sick of this kind of “news”. Who really needs it? Not that it’s inappropriate; but it does seem to fall under the “Non-essential” category of things to be immediately concerned with.
“Gin and Quinine water anyone? Had my first one yesterday, not bad”
I sip through about a half liter of diet tonic every day. No gin. In the olden days when we’d go out on the town it was vodka-tonic. I love tonic straight.
Its just that the insane hoarding of hand sanitizer is unnecessary.
Isn’t the answer obvious? Soap & water at home & where available, and sanitizer when you’re out and soap & water aren’t readily available.
Good ol hot soap and water. Always believed in that.
But it is best to have a soap that breaks down fat, emulsifies grease, which - aside from waterless hand cleaner - Dawn dish-soap is the best at among common items.
For years I have been making our own hands sanitizes, using water, alcohol and Dawn. Pour about half a foaming pump container (1.89 on Ebay ) with water, then about half that with alcohol (70% or 90%), and then fill the rest with Dawn (antibacterial if you want ), leaving about 1'' from the top, then screw the pump on and shake. Thank God for such money-saving means.
Wash your hands frequently, with soap, for twenty seconds.
I've also learned that the virus can live for up to seventeen days on an inanimate surface. So the package of bread I bring home, I either have to wash it, with soap, for twenty seconds, or quarantine it in my basement for seventeen days. Otherwise, when I open the wrapper, and reach in and touch a piece of bread.......
The possibilities are overwhelming.
Some evidence exists that the virus can be transmitted through the skin with cracked skin or cuts. So not sure if the “wash your hands until they are raw” is the best advice.
Also - I got a Staph infection through raw hands once. Laid me up in a small-town hospital far from home for three days. The doctor said I was lucky as if it had gone any longer (I thought I sprained my thumb) they would have had to amputate.
It happened again while home, and my real doctor said the other doctor was probably pulling my leg??!!
I wash my hands often, but once I’m in my clean house, I’ll use hand sanitizer every-other-time as it is less harsh. Also use hand lotion before bed.
Yeah. “Insane” is right. It’s not cute at all.
I drank a lot of tonic water years ago to alleviate some muscle cramps I was having. I read that it would help but I should have read other literature that it can cause tinnitus. I’ve been having a ringin in my ears since. Doesn’t bother me too much. It’s like white noise.
Remember that hand sanitizer is a convenience and substitute for soap and water. It is not the other way around.
My hands have been looking like Dolores Claiborne’s. I have not used hand cream for weeks.
I hear crickets and spring peepers in the dead of winter. What fun. To much hard rock, shooting and running chainsaws for 30 yrs.
Never thought it might be the gun and tonic too.
“Dawn dish-soap is the best at among common items.”
At all times we have four or five of the biggest jugs of super condensed Dawn stashed away. When we travel VERY light, I put Dawn in a small travel size bottle and we use it for body wash, shampoo, hands, etc. It’s harsh for shampoo, but for a few days it’ll do.
Gun=gin.
If it helps spread disease and contributes to the overall health of the nation, I do not consider it *non-essential*.
Considering what this virus is capable of doing in way too many people, which includes you and me, this is actually very useful information.
“If it helps spread disease and contributes to the overall health of the nation”
Okaaay...I think I know what you mean.
I got a staph infection in my thumb once from cleaning our bathroom during a remodel project.
From then on I ALWAYS clean it with nitrile gloves, which is why I always have a good store of it and was not caught flat footed with this all hit the fan 2 weeks ago.
If it helps PREVENT the spread of disease and contributes to the overall health of the nation, I do not consider it *non-essential*
