Cytokine storm An overreaction of the body's immune system [analogous to the response to Covid-19?]

Diseases such as covid-19 and influenza can be fatal due to an overreaction of the body’s immune system called a cytokine storm....The name ‘cytokine’ is derived from the Greek words for cell (cyto) and movement (kinos).

Sometimes the body’s response to infection can go into overdrive. For example, when SARS -CoV-2 – the virus behind the covid-19 pandemic – enters the lungs, it triggers an immune response, attracting immune cells to the region to attack the virus, resulting in localised inflammation. But in some patients, excessive or uncontrolled levels of cytokines are released which then activate more immune cells, resulting in hyperinflammation. This can seriously harm or even kill the patient.

Cytokine storms are a common complication not only of covid-19 and flu but of other respiratory diseases caused by coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS. They are also associated with non-infectious diseases such as multiple sclerosis and pancreatitis. The phenomenon became more widely known after the 2005 outbreak of the avian H5N1 influenza virus, also known as “bird flu”, when the high fatality rate was linked to an out-of-control cytokine response.

Cytokine storms might explain why some people have a severe reaction to coronaviruses while others only experience mild symptoms. They could also be the reason why younger people are less affected, as their immune systems are less developed and so produce lower levels of inflammation-driving cytokines.

In 2006, six healthy young men were left in intensive care with multiple organ failure as a result of an out-of-control cytokine immune response during a preclinical trial of a new kind of drug. This reaction happened just 90 minutes after receiving a dose of the drug.

extremely brief overview of cytokine storms. You can barely call that an article.

I read up more then that on it weeks ago.
Not trying to be critical, but if you are interested in the topic, google ‘cytokine storm’. You wont get anything in-depth from this link

I wanted a brief summation versus an extensive article for this forum, as analogous to the overeaction to Covid. Even a brief one will likely only get a few views. For more info there is this .

And those who do will learn that one of the properties of HCQ is that it modulates the cyrokine storm response, which helps badly ill patients to not get worse. This is in addition to its prophlyactic properties.

Additionally, cytokine storm is a frequent topic in health circles and there are ways to calm the body’s immune system to help it do it’s job more efficiently. The easiest and simplest way is to get enough sleep.

If you struggle with sleeping, try sitting outside in the bright morning sun to eat your breakfast (immediately after waking); stand a few minutes outside around noon. Then at sunset, make sure you reduce the amount of blue light (computer screens) to zero a couple hours prior to your bedtime. It’s not a crime to go to bed early if you feel sleepy.

I’m not a medical professional, just a mother/ grandmother. :-)

No what you posted here is not related AT ALL to the article.

These storm are very dangerous after brain injuries and many times cause much more damage than the injury itself.

analogous to the response to Covid-19

In some cases, yes. A majority? Highly doubtful.

Zinc is emerging as a key component in combating the virus. Examples of foods high in zinc include:

oysters, 3 ounces (oz): 74 mg.
beef patty, 3 oz: 5.3 mg.
Alaska king crab, 3 oz: 6.5 mg.
fortified breakfast cereal, 3/4 cup serving: 3.8 mg.
cooked lobster, 3 oz: 3.4 mg.
cooked pork chop loin, 3 oz: 2.9 mg.
baked beans, 1/2 cup serving: 2.9 mg.
dark meat chicken, 3 oz: 2.4 mg.

........and dark chocolate.......

Zinc Strengthens Your Immune System.....contributes to cellular immunity.

Mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, kale, and garlic also contain zinc.

That's great. I eat 3 of those daily for breakfast.

I'd say this article is likely correct; as a layman speaking.

From what Ive heard, your immune system say is working on all 4 cylinders, when your system is compromised, other diseases, over weight poor diet, lung issues your working off of two cylinders. When you come down with the virus the two cylinders over react 10 fold attacking internal organs and systems causing this cytokine condition that eventually kills you. Its your own body’s immune system overload that kills you
