Drive-in movie theaters a tiny, nearly forgotten sliver of the US cinema business may be poised for a comeback as the coronavirus has shuttered indoor movie theaters nationwide.
The coronavirus has wreaked havoc on the movie theater industry with over 40,000 screens closed in the US alone but a small group of drive-in theaters still remain in business, and they may soon be able to offer a little relief to pent-up moviegoers, according to a report.

Up north winter kills the drive-in movie idea. Daylight savings time doesn’t help during the summer.
How do the democrat governors persist in permitting drive-in movies while denying Christians the right to celebrate masses at those same drive-in theaters on Sunday during daylight hours when movies cannot be shown?
who ever actually watched the movies at those things?
“...steamed up windows in my 63’ Plymouth on the back row of the Atomic Drive-In.”
Same here only with my 62’Bubble Top Chev at the Route 4 Drive In, Paramus NJ.
There used to be an event in Georgia called the drive-in-vasion where bands would play and movies would be shown (like Blue Oyster Cult and Godzilla). There are things that could be done with that daylight hour before the sun goes down.
I think with the small compact cars it would be painful sitting through a double header.
Also, would be tough to make out in too.
If this does transpire, i would really enjoy a drive-in movie. And my husband growing up where there were no drive-ins, would love to experience it.
The snack bar will be closing in ten minutes.
The end of the drive-in movie era happened at the same time as the disappearance of the automobile bench seat.
Coincidence?
"Mommy...How come there's no people in that car?"
The song Night Moves comes to mind right now.
Ah yes , Night Moves with Bob Seger. Good old song.
We didnt seem to mind in a 69 camaro back in the day.
I doubt anyone will be planting 250 poles in the ground with a window speaker attached like the old drive in’s. That leaves low power radio frequency audio reception. But many modern cars like my Hyundai with a high end (power) Infinity audio system will only play for a couple minutes if the car ignition is off due to battery drain. Bluetooth doesn’t have the range so BT portable speakers are out. We might just have a revival of the Boom box!
Right on.
I remember hearing that snack bar message like it was yesterday.
The other thing was the mosquito repellant thing that put out citronella smoke. It resembled the heating element on the older electric stoves.
There is still a drive in close by here in Milford, NH. The Milford Drive In. It is opening this weekend May 15th. Open every year since 1958.
I don’t think this will last. People are used to big bright pictures and great audio....like many have in their living rooms now.
Why would anyone want to go to *any* kind of movie theater, when you can be at home, fridge and bathroom nearby, able to rewind, pause, use closed captions and headphones while seeing an image that's far,far better than a movie screen?
Way cool.
I remember the bug zappers that they had by the ticket booth.
Hot humid nights, getting your tickets and the bzzt bzzt of the bug zapper.
My neighbor actually invented the bug zapper when he was at Northwestern University. I think he sold the patent for $60K. He said it paid for his college loans.
