At around the time New Yorks state health department under Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a directive prohibiting nursing homes from testing recovering coronavirus patients prior to admission, Florida under Gov. Ron DeSantis issued its own executive order strictly regulating incoming patients to protect those facilities from the epidemic.
About a month and a half later, the differences are staggering. The latest tallies show that in Florida 745 residents and staff at long-term care facilities across the state have died from coronavirus although the numbers continue to rise in the state and nationwide. This compared to New Yorks 5,300 dead in nursing homes.
Florida has one of the nations largest elderly populations and is more populous than New York. The Sunshine State hosts over 4,400 nursing homes and assisted living facilities containing over 151,000 residents.
Cuomo is facing increasing criticism as the states elderly care facilities have been devastated by coronavirus.
And hes been forced in recent days to reverse a controversial March 25 directive requiring nursing homes to take recovering coronavirus patients.

I think the virus went through here in February and March...
I think my wife had it in mid February...
CMS changed its regs for a reason. With Fedzilla off their backs there was no good reason to send these patients back to their facilities.
Luv the Guv!
In NY, This has NEVER been about YOUR health.
In NY, This has NEVER been about protecting the most vulnerable!
What was tbe population of nursing home residents in NY?
That is right....for Democrats, scoring political points is more important than the needs of their subjects.
Cuomo was hoarding ventilators and hospital beds.
He demanded both from the Federal Government and got the Comfort sent while he was filling warehouses with ventilators.
He relegated the geezers back to their homes so that they wouldn’t cut into his stash.
I think he was having hot flashes. What a wuss.
EVERYTHING you said!
That’s why I have given Andrew Cuomo the moniker “The Nursing Home Killer”.
It’s catchy, it’s in your (his) face, and it’s TRUE!
That sign on the bridge “Cuomo killed my mom” should be made viral until Cuomo RESIGNS.
I also think I had it, I had mild symptoms, that took weeks to finally go away. My wife came down with the exact same symptoms about 2 weeks later (guess). There is zero question that she caught what she had from me.
Her symptoms, while the same, were far more severe. They lasted maybe 2 months. (a nagging unproductive cough with mucus you could feel moving in your lungs (upper), but COULD NOT cough up. Irritating, mentally and physically.
I can’t say I lost my sense of smell or taste, but I remember thinking about what to have for dinner and had the thought that NOTHING seems to taste good anymore. (note: I NEVER pass up a meal)
While we are both in our early seventies and have the underlying medical conditions, I am generally healthier and take many nutrition supplements regularly. My wife, in addition, is a heart patient on blood thinners who does not enjoy the same enthusiasm as I do when it comes to supplements.
I know. ANECDOTAL to the max, but I do believe we both had an early, less severe strain of COVID-19. Only a negative antibody test would convince me otherwise.
He said the lock down was to flatten the curve in order to prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed and we have been 100% successful, so we should open our country, NOW.
WOW, that little fag Toomey had the balls to say something that is politically incorrect, but absolutely correct.
Yes esp after all the talk about his mom. But if article comparing deaths in nursing homes in 2 states should have total number of people in homes in both stares. They only stated FL.
I recall reading that about 5% of NY NH residents died from this as compared to 0.7% in FL. In addition to the administrative differences it would be very interesting to know the respective rates of TIMELY HCQ use in those populations.
Agree. Every so often they surprise you....
FL, which was much more open, had a lot fewer deaths overall, although I think we actually have a slightly higher population than NYS. This could be due to a lot of factors.
But if youre talking just about the percentage of deaths in nursing homes, they did a good job here. Most of the first wave of deaths were in a few nursing homes, including in semi-rural North Florida, where theres barely any population to begin with. But Florida and GA did control the spread in their nursing homes. Another thing was that family knew the restrictions would be lifted as soon as possible and the homes made efforts to keep people in touch. Probably more people die of loneliness than of any cold virus.
Also, I think a lot of our nursing homes are much smaller and more dispersed than those in NY, so maybe this is also something that should be looked at.
Wow! This proves that elections matter.
