Canada Bans Cruise Ships For Remainder of 2020 Cruise Season
Cruise Critic ^ | May 29, 2020 | Aaron Saunders

-- Transport Canada has banned all cruise ships over 100 persons (passengers and crew) from operating within its waters until October 31, effectively ending the 2020 cruise season on both coasts.

The move was announced by Minister of Transport Marc Garneau and follows Canada's earlier decision to ban cruise ships from operating in Canadian waters until July 1.

“We understand the federal government’s motivations,” said Barry Penner, legal advisor to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Northwest & Canada. “In fact, the cruise industry was one of the first to voluntarily suspend operations when the World Health Organization declared a pandemic in March...Nevertheless, we recognize the adverse economic impacts the stoppage of cruise business in Canada is having on our cruise partners, such as longshore workers, tour operators, taxi drivers, hotel employees, numerous workers in the agricultural, manufacturing and food and beverage industries, as well as travel agents across the country.”

Even though you may not be planning an Alaskan or New England and Canada cruise, this Canadian shutdown will cause a ripple effect through the Foreign flagged Cruise lines operating out of the West coast and the East Coast cities like Boston an New York.

The cruise lines will have to remove some of the ships and reschedule others possibly to Bermuda if they open up there. Early November is the end of the Bermuda season, and the Boston/ NY cruise ships are large (1,000 ' +/-)and can only dock two cruise ships in the Dockyard in the extreme west end, and can't dock in the Capitol Hamilton, or dock in St Georges extreme East end. Of course you can always anchor up off the Dockyard, and shuttle ashore.

This 2020 season anywhere on a cruise ship is shaping up to be a hassle. -Tom

Bad news, given who runs Canada not unexpected. I hope the lines were prepared for this.

Another factor affecting cruise ships is the inability to detect some covid -19 passengers before boarding, and days later some of the passengers get sick, and the overreaction by the countries and ports and cruise ships and passengers, and air lines, can be mind boggling. -Tom

China’s war on the world is having horrific consequences. This will hurt Alaska’s economy.

Carnival Spirit will stay over in Australia with the Splendor this summer ...she should have returned to Alaska last month...in April ...I guess Australia will have 2 ships..

She has taken the place of the Legend which used to do Australia/NZ and the Pacific Oct to April and Hawaii/Alaska April to Oct ...

The Legend went to the Caribbean and should have left NYC for the Mediterranean on June 3 this year until she returned in Oct but shes not doing anything until at least Nov...(No European cruises this summer)

Lots of cancelled cruises...plus the new Mardi Gras is going to be even later now..

There are ever shifting problems for the cruise lines.

Airline problems, and many other shifting problems are going to make some of the cruise lines keep it simple, and do shorter cruises, until the so-called new normal is established.

Also changing the behavior of the passengers to accommodate ports , countries, viruses and other medical situations onboard may reduce the number of people who want to go on a cruise.-Tom

If there is no vaccine a fast test will be absolutely crucial for cruising to survive. Fast as in minutes. If they can get test results in less then a 30 minutes that would do it. Check anyone getting on or off and there’s no reason to deny a ship going to port.

When I mentioned Airlines, I was referring to cruise ships getting Airlines to fly cruise ship passengers to cruise ships abound the world.
A lot of Airlines are not flying right now to the destinations they flew to in the past.-Tom

Drawing upon the great American observer, Whoopie Goldberg, how do the cruise lines go bankrupt-bankrupt?

There is no way on this planet that the debt and assets can be written down to a level that cruise lines can survive.

Cruise lines are dinosaurs. Mount a couple of examples at the museum and send the rest to the breakers in Pakistan.

Unfortunately cruise lines have to deal with conflicting testing and information about Covid19. -Tom

From People: -- WHO Warns That Antibody Testing Does Not Ensure Immunity: ‘There Is Not Enough Evidence’
Smyth added, though, that this may mean that more people have unknowingly had COVID-19 and “these individuals may have immunity.” At this point, however, it is not yet known if people who had COVID-19 are immune to getting it again.

Remember the old saw where a person was asked "How did you go bankrupt?

His answer; "First it was slowly, then it was suddenly." -Tom

Should say fast and reliable tests. Conflicting info is a problem and many countries still trust the compromised bastards in the WHO.

Unless some infected person coughs or sneezes in YOUR direction within 5-6 feet, you are not going to get infected through airborne virus.

The most probable way to get infected is to touch someone infected or some object which has been touched by others. Now the virus cells are attached to your palm/fingers.

But the virus can NOT penetrate through tough skin of palm and fingers. The only way you can get infected is touch contaminated hand to your eyes/nose/mouth.

I was on a crowded cruise ending on Feb 29th. I have shopped grocery stores at least once a week since then. Been to bank, hospital and eye doctors office. I did not wear mask before May. SO if I can avoid getting infected by not touching face, anyone can.

Sadly this aspect of prevention is not being publicized as front and critical. Testing is good only for a few minutes until you touch someone or something in the next 15 minutes. It is a waste of resources and has no reliability.

covid-19 is a weak virus but much more infectious. So prevent the most probable way of getting infected...wash hands with soap before touching face.

Soap is even better than anti-bacterial stuff. Because the soap dissolves the protective layer of fat around the virus cell and that kills it quickly.

You’re right of course but if a quick reliable test emerges the Cruise lines can use them to assure the ports that it’s safe to let passengers disembark.

You can see the problem on cruise ships, where thousands of people are going to have to test negative to get on or off, with tests that sometimes erroneously test positive, and we know what happens to the cruise ships when that happens.

Cruising in 2020 is entering into uncharted waters. -Tom

Yes that is a great point, a false positive would be a huge problem. Now that you bring up that point I don’t know what happen with cruising. Speaking for myself l would have no problem going back out but it sure is uncertain. I guess we either get a vaccine or effective and quick cure or cruising may be finished as much as l hate to say it or the damn virus could mutate into something benign
