Voices of Concern, Voices of Hope: Experiences of African Immigrants in Detroit Invisible Sojouners [2007: culture vs. color: USA black culture vs African(revealing)

Many African immigrants come from the educated elite a nd, if they are not native English speakers, often possess some degree of fluency in Eng lish. The inability to understand the English spoken by some African Americans may impede the ability of African immigrants and African Americans to interact socially and professionally....

Emmanuel, from Senegal, is insistent about the value of learning English: "Learning correct English is the first step to assimilate into American culture." 28 He faults many African Americans for taking th eir education for granted while not even trying to use correct English. Emmanuel's ch ief complaint regarding African American vernacular is that, to his ears as someone tr ying hard to learn English, the vernacular sounds sloppy, imprecise and disrespectful. To date, Emmanuel has only met a few African Americans in positions of authorit y and, when he did, he was struck by the dividing line among African Americans who spoke correct English and those who spoke African American vernacular...

Previous studies of African immigran ts indicate that Africans attach less importance to their race as a defining char acteristic than do African Americans. For example, the seminal study by Professor John A. Arthur, Invisible Sojourners: African Immigrant Diaspora in the United States, c oncludes that African immigrants are not preoccupied with race but, instead, focus on educational attainment and human capital as necessary for success in the U.S. 29

African immigrants recognize that racism and discrimination exist in U.S. society and can impede economic progress but believe those obstacles can be overcome through educat ion, persistence a nd entrepreneurial motivation. 30 An African immigrant quoted in the Ar thur study stated: "In spite of past discriminatory practices, I know many nativ e-born blacks who have quit trying. Some 14 have consciously decided not to empower themselves by committing to education. You cannot always blame the white man." 31

African immigrants often express their fr ustration with their African American counterparts who they perceive as hamper ing their own progress: "even when you succeed, you are still considered a failure because you left the ghetto and became too white." 32 Yet African immigrants can be somewh at naïve regarding r ace relations. As one African immigrant noted in a separate study:

Growing up in Africa . . ., the culture of White racism and prejudice was not part of the African upbringing . . . . [w]e were aware of the history of slavery but, in all cases, we were wil ling to forget and forgive. It never occurred to us that we would be the targets of hate simply because of the color of our skin. Interestingly, ou r Black and brown skins did not open the doors wide for us in the African American community either. We were, and remain to many African Amer icans, outsiders or beneficiaries of their struggle against a racist society. If we are too successful and live in a nice White neighborhood, then we are accused of betraying our race, being "Black Bourgeois" and wanting to be White. To White neighbors, we are safe because we are Blacks from Africa . . ., not from the South or Brooklyn and, to their stereotypical way of thinking, we do not do drugs or alcohol or have big late night parties.

African immigrants and African American s exist in separate and conflicting worlds and, in many cases, share only the co mmon physical characteristics by which they are judged by majority societ y. Indeed, African immigrants ar e often surprised to be the beneficiaries of racist attitudes towards African Americans...

Wario, an African immigrant from Kenya, earned his university and post-graduate degrees in the U.S. and now provides mental health counseling to Michig an prison inmates. In that position, he comes into frequent contact with African Amer icans as the majority of his colleagues and the inmates are African American. Wario sees the African American inmates as eager to blame their problems on racism and poverty while white inmates are more likely to blame drugs or alcohol for their personal and legal troubles. 35...

Many African American staff will honor thes e requests and, when challenged by Wario regarding a rules infraction, will explain that they are merely "helping a brother". Wario is also approached by African American inma tes for favors and he refuses to honor their requests. As a result, the African American inmates openly refer to Wario as "Uncle Tom" or "sell-out". In counseling sessions, when Wario suggests that racism may not be at the heart of all of their personal or legal troubles, Af rican American inmates often become confrontational and accuse Wario of not know ing about their experiences because he did not grow up black in Detroit...

Merid, an immigrant from Ethiopia who has lived in the U.S. for many years, is adamant that African American leaders have failed to advance the cause of African Americans as a whole. 37 In particular, he faults Rev. Al Sharpton for whipping up resentment among lower-income African Americans against whites...

Despite his personal encounter with racial prejudice, Wario also deplores African American leaders, including the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, whom he accuses of using African Americans for their own personal and political gain while taking few concrete actions to help Afri can Americans...

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau bears out that African immigrants tend to live in whiter neigh borhoods: in southeast Michigan, the population is a pproximately 45 percent white where African immigrants live but only approximately 17 percent white where African Americans live. 45..

Jean Pierre, an African immigrant from C ongo, reports that African Americans, at first, appeared confused to see a large group of black men playing soccer and soon realize that the players are African immigrants and e ither ignore or are dism issive of the African players or, in a friendly spirit, challenge the African players to play basketball or other "American sports" such as baseball or football. 47..

Based on the results of this admittedly statistically-insignificant and anecdotal survey, African immigrants, in Detroit, have little affinity for African Americans, much less any interest in being identified by others as African American. 51...

, African im migrants surveyed reported that they stress their accents, avoid clothi ng styles worn by African American youth, and do not socialize with African Americans. 55

At 68 and as one who has lived in a city of immigrants for many years, I believe that this study (which I suspect will disappear from the Internet if the Left discovers it), though dated and focused on one city, provides a microcosm of a situation that i believe was nationwide, at least at that time.

In which the problem in race relations was and is one of culture, not color, since they who immigrate to America typically did not and does not (at least initially) - with exceptions (in particular the Muslim Somali culture) - subscribe to the same demonic victim-entitlement mentality that liberals have worked to inculcate for decades, thereby selfishly and falsely presenting themselves as liberators.

And which the Al Sharptons of this country play off of. And which led to the decay of the native American black family, and the rise in crime among the products thereof.

Data from U.S. Census reports reveal that between 1880-1960, married households consisting of two-parent homes were the most widespread form of African-American family structures. Although the most popular, married households decreased over this time period. Single-parent homes, on the other hand, remained relatively stable until 1960; when they rose dramatically.[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_family_structure#cite_note-Ruggles-28]

A study of 1880 family structures in Philadelphia, showed that three-quarters of Black families in America were nuclear families, composed of two parents and children. In New York City in 1925, 85% of kin-related Black households in America had two parents. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_family_structure#cite_note-jewishworldreview.com-29]

In 1991, 68% of Black children in America were born outside of marriage. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_family_structure#cite_note-20]

In 2011, 72% of Black babies in America were born to unmarried mothers.[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_family_structure#cite_note-21][https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American_family_structure#cite_note-22]

85% of all children who show behavior disorders, and 85% of all youths in prison come from fatherless homes [https://sdachurchwarwick.org/uploads/3/5/3/8/35387688/statistics___the_fatherless_generation.pdf]

In 2015, 77% of Black babies in America (aside from immigrants) were born to unmarried mothers. [https://cis.org/Camarota/Births-Unmarried-Mothers-Nativity-and-Education]

Certainly President Trump understands the importance of and to make the most of prime time television. Recent events have provided another opportunity for him to address the nation during prime time.

In order to get the media to provide coverage and provide it from start to finish, the even will need to be a subject they can not resist to cover.

The subject can be an announcement on the use of the military and national guard during the current rioting. The potential for points against Trump will be too much for them not to cover.

But instead of allowing them to score points president Trump should go on offensive driving three major points across to the American public.

First as the prime time event starts you will see President trump and three pastors. President Trump will be kneeling on both knees. You will have a priest a rabbi and a pastor. One of which should be African American. They will all have hands on the President praying over him silently.

The President will then stand up and recite the pledge of allegiance before the American flag.

He will then follow with a short address containing three points to cover. Keeping the press from breaking away coverage is important so the speech must be short and concise.

The first point will be for every event an American flag is raised or honored a short period of prayer and reflection be given asking God for reconciliation and a deeper understanding of what divides our country before the flag is displayed.

The second point will be about funds (in the billions) that will be allocated toward training for police departments throughout the United States on procedures for handling situations such as George Floyd.

The third and final would be notification to the American people of the President’s plan to federalize the national guard if a peaceful solution to domestic terrorist activity can not be found.

He should then end and leave the room.

“Many African immigrants come from the educated elite...”

They probably have IQs at least one standard deviation higher than the average american black.

There would be no discrimination against blacks if they were predominantly like him, and they would be quite successful in this country.

The answers to the “race problems” are in “The Bell Curve”.

From observing the ghetto blacks in New Orleans I would say a majority of young males do not grow up in any recognizable family unit. Granny or Auntie gives them a bed and meals until 11/12 then they run the streets all the time dropping by for a diner or a bed or when the heat is on them. These males are true savages, the most primitive tribal peoples have a developed set of mores and taboos. These males have none other than violent tempers and self indulgence.

Exception are African Muslims. They are at or below African-American levels of intelligence. See Somalia.

Left out one key factor about this group: they are the sperm donors who will create the next round of similarly situated feral males. The truly unfortunate corollary to this is that there are females who choose to have sex with such dead-enders who will leave them to deal with the natural result. There seems to be no future view of the kind expressed by the African immigrants in the OP.

Have 2 black friends who are immigrants, one from Haiti, one from Ethiopia. Neither can understand Black America.

Rather, it is character, the heart, that determines how intelligence will be used. And it seems that the typical college graduate does not show superior judgment or work ethics.

It’s not the skin color I don’t want in my neighborhood.

It’s the crime, violence, noise, unkempt property, etc.

Leave me alone, be respectful, clean neighbors, and no problem. Whatever your skin color.

“Leave me alone, be respectful, clean neighbors, and no problem. Whatever your skin color.”

Unfortunately there is a correlation between certain human traits and race. It isn’t just color of skin. There are many asian indians that are darker than most blacks, but they have done very well in the US. Most of them come from the upper castes of India and are quite smart. No discrimination against them as a group, or if there is it’s positive.

And yes there are plenty of American blacks that are smart, but they tend to be outliers, and it is the masses, the two sigmas around the average that impact society and that create the prevailing reputation of any easily identifiable groups of people.

So when you say leave me alone and be respectful and be clean and no crime, that is fine, but this country is such that we don’t get to pick our neighbors or who we work with. Remember we are forbidden to discriminate under penalty of law. Therein lies the problem. If we had true freedom of association this country would be split along racial lines, just like it used to be before the civil rights act.

Even today there is “white flight”, though it is harder and harder to do.

The racial mess we’re in is only going to get worse. The reality is that blacks and whites have never been able to peacefully coexist together anywhere in the world. (There is a very understandable reason for that). Until that reality is accepted by whites, and that no amount of self-flagellation, reparations, caving to every black demand is going to change it (in fact it will make it worse), whites will continue to debase and guilt themselves into a quivering mush of flesh in their own country - like whipped dogs.

The solution is separation. Let whites and blacks have their own separate country. It’s best for both. And there could also be a third country for people who like to be mixed. That is true freedom of association.

But there isn’t one single politician that dares to go there. Although Lincoln himself was pushing for such a solution.

“Have 2 black friends who are immigrants, one from Haiti, one from Ethiopia. Neither can understand Black America.”

Immigrants by the very fact that they emigrated and restarted their life in a foreign land means they had initiative, intelligence, courage that was a step above the average of their group.
