Damn near anything else would be offensive to somebody, and I’m not 100% sure the term, “football,” isn’t culturally appropriated from the British.
As a lifelong, but now former, Skins’ fan I think your last sentence hit the nail on the head. (Having to type former really hurts.)
There was no way a $3 billion franchise could be rebranded and ditch 84 years of history in a month and come up with something that any FAN would be on board with. But somehow Nike, Pepsi and FedEx all got woke within 24 hours and Goodell agreed that it had to change immediately. A possible hypothesis... this was the only way to get Snyder to sell and allow the new owner not to be the bad guy who changed the name. Bezos or some other billionaire Bond villain type is ready to pick up the pieces. Pay for the new stadium in cash and grease all the local pockets necessary to get it done in record time.
Attendance has been hurting for years but there was a core of solid Skins fans. Now we have been branded as racists. I can’t cheer for my old team. It is gone. Why should I care? Even without COVID, who is going to pay $120 per ticket and $50 to park to cheer for a team with no name? They also need a new stadium. No way it happens under Snyder now. No way. He’ll have to sell or move the team.
Singing Hail to the Redskins with thousands of like minded fans and having a great time doing it...didn’t matter what color we were, where we came from, our politics... our religion... none of it mattered. We were Skins fan. It brought people together. It’s gone forever now.
I’m done with the NFL.
