The Hero With a Thousand Options: The Anti-Mythology of the Star Wars Sequels

The original Star Wars trilogy stands as one of the greatest cinematic trilogies ever made. It spawned a franchise that consists of additional movies, novels, comic books, video games, and even radio dramas. The genius of the Star Wars franchise is in how it created something that feels entirely original, but is deeply indebted to millennia of stories that came before it. Star Wars contains influences from not only space adventure serials and Westerns, but also Arthurian tales, Greek Myth, and even religion.

That being said, the Star Wars movies have not always lived up to their original standard. For years, George Lucas’s prequel films detailing the transformation of Jedi Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader were reviled as some of the worst films ever made. When Disney announced its acquisition of the franchise and subsequent plans to make new movies in 2012, fans went wild. It couldn’t possibly get any worse than the prequels.

Or could it…?

The only thing I can think of is that Ben One Obi Kenobe came out of recluse and returned to being a Jedi...

I thought Rogue One was plodding and very predictable.

Fair enough, but at least Rogue One didn’t have Ewoks!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was actually good.

Hans Solo was okay, kinda like prequels.

Others were garbage.

I actually liked Rogue One. Just my opinion.

“I actually liked Rogue One.”

That sequence at the end where Darth Vader tries to retrieve the disk with the Death Star plans is one of the highlights of the entire set of films - especially since it can be seen in 3D.

“I never understood when they retitled the original one, A New Hope. What is it referring to; what is the hope that they are talking about? Who was hoping for what?

I’m sorry I’m not a staunch Star Wars fan, but have enjoyed seeing them.”

The *previous* “hope” had crashed and burned. Badly. With much flame. There were always rumors and allusions to things that happen before the events of Star Wars. The Clone Wars, the war between the Mandelorians and the Jedi. And that one galactic jerk, Darth Vader, cruising around the galaxy murdering every Jedi he could find.

Fan club newsletters and stuff dropped lots of hints, but almost all of it got thrown away, and ol George Lucas just made his prequels from whole cloth. The “old hope” had been Luke’s father, Anakin. He was supposed to have been the guy who would save everybody, but he ended up changing sides.

The last I’d heard, the first prequel would’ve featured Luke’s birth, but that was (using my fingers to count the years), 30-some odd years ago.

The prequels were bad because they were seemingly designed to appeal to kids and because George Lucas was let loose to continue the tinkering he did on the originals only on a massive scale. Plus, and this is a major one for me, he turned the most fearsome badass villain in the galaxy into a whiny teenager.

I didn't mind Episode VII even though it was pretty much Episode IV rehashed because I viewed it as a reassurance that things were back on track after the mess of the prequels. Didn't take long into Episode VIII to realize how wrong I was. I can only imagine how much worse Episode IX was, but I'll never know.
