In this classic Free To Choose Network footage (1978), Milton Friedman takes three questions from an audience member and crushes them all.
The real problem is, that as we move from the local community to the state, from the state to the Federal government, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to control the mechanism we have established and that mechanism tends to control us. That was the great wisdom of the founding fathers of this country, of the people who wrote the Constitution. That constitution was designed to limit governments powers in order to preserve the freedom of the individual, and what has happened in the past fifty years is that the fundamental character of the Constitution has really been changed. We have broadened enormously the conception of what is a governmental power and what is not, and have departed from that limited government until we have created a Frankenstein, an unlimited government that threatens to destroy us.
42 years ago, so, this is history -- modern, but still history.
Milton Friedman is a hero of mine. Brilliant, fearless, and with a sense of humor that could cut down progressivism with one pithy one liner.

That, and he gets right to the heart of what the person is really asking. He does not seem to ever get distracted from the main question.
Good post, thanks.
An important example of what is NOT taught by pubic school teachers and college perps, for decades.
My High School’s greatest product. Carl Sagan was second.
Posting for later...

what HS would that be?
I remember this! Loved when he was on Donahue.
When I was in middle school we had a 1940’s round screen TV in the basement. I was turning the channels and came across a guy with the strangest accent I’ve ever heard.
It was William F Buckley. I watched “Firing Line”
religiously after that. (Parents thought I was a bit weird.)
True that the American people are partly responsible for demanding more services across state lines. But just as complicit is The United States Congress, who has relinquished their constitutional responsibility to consider and pass legislation, relinquished it to bureaucracies that they have created and are negligent to regulate their abuses.
