Vince Lombardi was hard on everyone. But he loved Paul Hornung.
Spend enough time listening to the old Green Bay Packers from the 1960s and they will share that if Lombardi had a favorite, it was his halfback from Notre Dame. Lombardi called Hornung "the best all-around back ever to play football.
Hornung died at age 84 after a battle with dementia. The Louisville Sports Commission announced Hornungs death.

I remember him clearly we were stunned when we lost him to the expansion draft. Great football player. He was a wild man in his day. But, nothing compared to todays National Felon League.
Good time to leave, Paul. RIP and thank you.
He was a part of the Lombardi/Packer Golden era of Football. Rest in peace Paul.
Spent many Sundays and Thanksgivings watching he and the Pack, seemingly always playing the Bears or Lions. RIP Paul.
I loved that he was Lombardi’s favorite son, and also his whipping boy when needed.
Lombardi was heartbroken at the gambling scandal when it happened.
I liked Hornung, may he RIP.
Years ago, When I was a student in the Irish Guard, I was in the bathroom at Notre Dame stadium in my Irish Guard uniform/kilt.
It was halftime and Lindsay Nelson and Paul Hornung walked in while I was using one of our famous ND Stadium troughs to take a wizz. Hornung looked over at Nelson and said, that my plaid kilt was way better than any loud sport coat of yours. We all had a good laugh and whenever people tell me they met this movie star or that politician, I always tell them I once took a piss between Paul Hornung and Lindsay Nelson.
Requiescat in pace Golden Boy.
Great story. The Indianapolis speedway still has a few of the legendary troughs, although they’re nicely formed stainless steel now, not like the old sections of 6 inch roof guttering.
An amazing player.
I have great memories of Lindsay Nelson as the TV voice of the NY Mets on WOR.
Condolences to family and friends of Paul Hornung. The Packers and Lions Thanksgiving Day games were classic. Thank you, sir. R.I.P. love.

Sheesh...I haven’t watched the Detroit Lions in 30+ years.
Sports is so downstream from survival/family.
Actually, bad time to leave. Not allowed visitors in hospitals, die alone, not allowed to have funerals, etc.
Oddly glad my dad died last Thanksgiving, before this horror show. He had 30 people visit when we thought the time came, and 5 of us slept there when he died. Wouldnt be allowed now.
I am a Packers fan, however, today’s Football players aren’t the players of yesteryear. Prayers to his family and to all Cheeseheads!
Around 1964, the Quarterback Club took us down to the Orange Bowl to see the Green Bay Packers play the St. Louis Cardinals play in the Pro Bowl. I got to see Paul Hornung and John David Crow with Bart Starr at quarterback. I don’t remember much, don’t know who won.
RIP.
I will never forget an interview the press had with Hornung. He was getting out of a taxi and they asked him how he was able to go out and party all night and that afternoon out and play a fantastic football game. His response was simple and historic. He claimly look at them and said “Practice, Practice, Practice and walked off.
Rest easy, FRiend. Golden Boy didn't die alone -- your numbers are about his numbers.
