TAMPA (WFLA) – Ann Turner Cook was only 4 months old when she became famous as the original Gerber baby. She turned 94 on Friday.
According to the company’s website, Gerber held a contest in 1928 to find a face to represent their baby food.
Many artists submitted oil paintings, but Dorothy Hope Smith, who specialized in children’s portraits and happened to be Cook’s neighbor, submitted a charcoal sketch which was selected.
Cook’s face appeared on Gerber products beginning in 1928 and became the official trademark in 1931.
"In American grocery stores they put a picture of the food on the jar. I can't read English but can tell what is in the container by looking at the picture. I see beans and it's beans. I see corn and it's corn. I see peas and it's peas. Then I see a jar with a baby on the label...WHAT A COUNTRY!...."
I’d be curious to know if she made money for all those years. 8>)
Gerber is clearly racist.
I wonder how long before the wokesters force Gerber to apologize for the whiteness of their label and consign Ann Cook to the ash bin of history?
When did she begin making Gerber knives?
Regards,
They got paid $300 up front. And she got a lifetime settlement of $5000 in the early 1950’s.
She made some money as a novelist later in life—much more than her family ever got paid for her likeness.
They replaced her. The new baby was paid in the millions.
Strange headline...that’s a really old baby.
If you look at the right edge you can see what looks like the artist’s initials. I wonder if the original drawing still exists. It is a bit of America as well as a famous example of commercial art - it should be worth something.
She’s still very pretty.
A little bit of trivia.
Germany had a national contest for the ideal Germanic/Aryan baby. A photographer sent in a beautiful baby girl who was Jewish and she won. He knew this. Germans never caught on .
“She’s still very pretty.”
I agree. 9 months ago when my daughter had her first child, a girl I spoke with the attending nurse afterward. I said I was prejudice but my new granddaughter was very beautiful (C-section helps that). The nurse agreed and said we call babies like your granddaughter “Gerber babies”. Cute.
That’s funny.
The lady looks great.
She’s still a cutie...even if she’s only 92.
that’s interesting, thanks.
Enjoy that precious bundle!
I’ve heard that before. Good to have a reminder of the story.
So she ate Gerber baby food...and look what happened to her! :>)
Congrats to this grand old lady.
