A young Rita Moreno tried to emulate Elizabeth Taylor in her appearance, but when it came to her hair she maintained her cultural identity.

During the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, Moreno, 89, opened up about her early years in Hollywood and Gene Kelly’s request to cut her hair for her role as Zelda Zanders in the 1952 film “Singin’ in the Rain.”

“I did something that is so Latina because I was the shyest person on earth, and I said no,” Moreno, who is the subject of the documentary “Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It.” “Well, we don’t cut my hair where I live, we don’t do that,” she said.

She made the right decision.

The Lady from Shanghai, which is a great movie, flopped because Rita Hayworth's hair was cut short. People said Orson Welles had her do that as some kind of revenge, because they were getting divorced. Columbia Pictures head Harry Cohn was furious this had been done without telling him, because she was one the studio's top actresses.

Veronica Lake's career started going down hill, when the government asked her to cut her trademark hair. She did it out of patriotism.

I'm not sure why people want women to cut their hair so short.

I just watched a video about how Gene Kelly would browbeat his female colleagues to tears. But that was by making them practice like hell and yelling at them that they weren’t good enough yet. Cutting their hair? I knew he obsessively controlled the dancing aspects (to the point of being almost abusive about it) but I didn’t think Kelly was deciding what people wore and what their hair looked like. Interesting, quite a control freak.

But he was devout Democrat, so it’s okay.

Fred Astaire was rightwing and Gene Kelly was leftwing. Kelly thought men dancers should act like men and not girly boys so today’s Left would not approve of him.

It was a movie based in the 1920s and the female flappers of that period had short hair. The two female leads in the movie had short hair.

I like a girl with long beautiful hair. I still am in love with Charles Dana Gibson’s Gibson Girls for their beautiful hair.

The 1920s Flapper era was horrid when the girls shorn their locks.

By the late 1930s beautiful hair became back in style.

What's all the hullabaloo about Rita Moreno as "Zelda Zanders" in "Singin' in the Rain?"

Ms. Moreno had absolutely no lines in that film. It was basically a "walk-on."

Regards,

It is a pet peeve of mine when women are forced into shearing their hair for movie or TV roles. Yuck.

‘The 1920s Flapper era was horrid when the girls shorn their locks.’

that, and public smoking, was a way of emphasizing their breakaway from the patriarchy...

‘By the late 1930s beautiful hair became back in style.’

indeed; but for the record, I’m not wild about unrestrained long hair on a woman...a young girl, yeah, but a grown woman should wear her hair in whatever style makes her look good...

I leave it up to them to know what that style is...

Very pretty young woman back in the day.

Page six photo from the era. Dress strap fell off her shoulder and front part of dress fell down a bit. She is leaning forward in the chair. You’d think a wardrobe guy would fix the dress before the photo......

Oh wait, never mind.
