Anyone know about Google's Widevine DRM add-in for different browsers? Snooping and Evil? or go ahead and install?
Amazon, Netflix, Dissenter Browser (Brave) | Today | Me

Posted on 05/08/2021 2:03:59 PM PDT by time4good

I noticed a pop-up about two months ago when I started using Brave and Dissenter (Gab's version of Brave) but I think I've seen it while using Microsoft's Edge (which uses same Chromium engine by Google). It is called Widevine and it seems it's being pushed as the in-browser video viewer for trailers/videos from Hollywood. Anyone know if it'll snoop back to Google what I'm watching? Here's the blurb from the pop-up to install:

"Google Widevine is a piece of Digital Rights Management (DRM) code that we at Gab AI Inc do not own and cannot inspect. The Google Widevine code is loaded from Google servers, not from our servers. It is loaded only when you enable this option. We discourage the use of DRM, but we respect user choice and acknowledge that some Dissenter users would like to use services that require it.

By installing this extension, you are agreeing to the Google Widevine Terms Of Use. You agree that Dissenter is not responsible for any damages or losses in connection with your use of Google Widevine."

Evil? or meh - no big deal, or - Google knows/sees everything so why bother.

I kill it in task manager every time my browsers adds it, then go and delete it altogether. No adverse results in any browser session from doing that. Your browser will work fine without it, no matter what messages your browser gives you. The only things hat don’t work right without it are related to Google, and none of that matters.

It’s then usual legal mumbo jumbo with the added clause about selling your soul and forfeiting eternal life. Nothing to get excited about. Standard boilerplate TOS.

I wouldn’t take the chance. I am doing everything I can to stay as far away from Google as I can, just on general principles. It’s hard, because I still need it for email at the moment — too many contacts do not have my ProtonMail address and I can’t use the migration tool because my Mac is so old, but I will accomplish that soon — at which time I will delete everything Google-related.

I get the same pop-up and hit the “deny/block” button. Same with the “xxx would like to use your location” get the “deny”. Even though they still probably do. 😕

Avoid all things google like the plague.
Detail all Google server sites.
This will come in handy when we have to “process” those sites.

I mostly use Brave Browser

So using Brave On Amazon if I want to watch a video I must agree to installation of Widevine. Otherwise I never see anything on the internet about Widevine

I also use use Chrome. There is no asking at Amazon about Widevine, probably because Chrome comes with it pre-installed.

I haven’t looked. I don’t trust anything google. So I assume that no matter what they ‘say’ in TOS, they’re going to snoop/record/store.

I can do without the trailer playing - just have to think of alternatives. I had uninstalled Firefox due to their Wokeness a few months ago. They are one of the few main browser players that use Mozilla browser rather than Chromium - which Edge, Chrome, Brave and derivative Dissenter all use.

really....Is this a question ???

Google is involved ...go straight to the worst possible response that you might ever think of....

Google and the Lake of Fire are one, in my humble opinion.

I use Firefox to avoid these issues.

Woke, yes they are.

But they make a damn good browser.

Get used to “growing your own everything” if you boycott a product because they are woke.

Selection, discretion and compromise.
