The psychologist’s guide to easy weight loss for midlife men
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | June 16th, 2021 | Gavin Newsham

We’re fast turning into the world leaders in obesity. According to The Health Survey for England 2017, the levels of obesity in England have nearly doubled since 1993 (from 15 per cent to 29 per cent) and 35.6 per cent of adults in England are classified as overweight.

And it gets worse as you age. Between the ages of 45 and 64, this figure rises to 39 per cent.

Obesity rates among British men, meanwhile, are the highest in Western Europe. In 2017, the European Society of Cardiology ranked British men as the most obese in a study of 47 countries.

Obesity in midlife men presents all manner of medical issues: hypertension, high cholesterol, respiratory problems. They are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes at a lower body mass index (BMI) than women and evidence from Cancer Research shows that obesity is the biggest cause of cancer after smoking. In 2017, meanwhile, a study by University College London discovered those with a higher BMI are also more likely to have dementia in later life. The list is endless, and the dangers all too real.

But losing weight when you hit midlife isn’t easy. With testosterone levels waning, it becomes more difficult for men to build muscle, as well as burn calories, which means you’re more susceptible to fat building up around the stomach and chest.

I post these silly articles in the hope that even one of you will decide to get up off their ass and move.

And quit eating all that sh!t.

Start small and endeavor to get better every day.

Because of your emotional reaction to the idea, you’re likely in need of some of the medicine.

I comment on these threads because I’m compassionate and empathetic I don’t want you to feel alone in wasting your time.

I've lost 25 pounds since February. Exercise every day and getting used to eating less, which is the same as saying "learning to enjoy being a little hungry all the time."

Although I have to say I crave food a little less every week. And I really enjoy being able to stand up from my chair without pushing myself off the armrests, so that's encouragement.

salad with protein (meat, chicken, hard boild eggs) is the best diet.

Bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Jello at least once a week. Beets as much as you can stomach (pickled beets are a great snack)

NO WHEAT AT ALL!!!! (your joints will thank you when they don’t hurt anymore)

I lost 40 pounds like nothing

Just getting on my 10-speed and riding a few miles a week has helped a lot. Luckily, I live in a hilly area with a lot of inclines.

<< NO WHEAT AT ALL!!!! (your joints will thank you when they don’t hurt anymore) >>

I’ve never been overweight, but I could sure use some joint pain relief. But man, avoiding wheat isn’t easy.

It’s basically a Noom ad disguised as an article but incremental changes are the best way to go imo

One of my fave cartoons involves a guy yelling “No you idiot, one word, one!” at another painting “psycho the rapist” on a door.

I eat two nearly dry, over medium eggs every morning along with either ham, bacon or sausage and a piece of sprouted grain bread.

Working out only 5days/week as I found at my age I need the extra day of recovery.

My resting pulse is down to 57.

I do some cardio each of the 5 days, and lift a combined 2000-2500lbs 3 days.

I am 65yrs old. Retired and have the time for exercise and food prep.

It was an ischemic stroke that woke me up 5 years ago.

Keep ‘em up - they’re motivation that some folks need to hear.

Found myself in same boat a couple years ago, 40+ pounds overweight and a-gainin’. Decided to do a simple exercise and keep count of calories consumed in an average week. I was so shocked after just three days I quit doing that and figured out what I could stand to eat that would keep me under 1,800 a day, and started walking. Took time, but seeing the weight come off was the best motivator of all.

“Eating all that sh!t” sounds rough as a cob, but it’s utterly true - really look at what’s going in the pie-hole and how much...us middle-age guys don’t need to eat like hay-bale tossing teens.
