Lawmakers Probe Navy’s Plan to Decommission Cruisers, Navy Says Cuts Will Save $5B Across FYDP

The Navy – both in this current budget cycle and in previous years – has received criticism over its repeated strategy of wanting to divest legacy capabilities to invest in new technology and platforms. Both Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.), a former nuclear-qualified surface warfare officer, and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) today expressed skepticism about the Navy’s divest to invest approach in the recent budget request. They argued the Navy has more immediate threats to address in the Indo-Pacific region.

Luria, who during her career in the Navy served as the executive officer of Anzio, has been a vocal opponent of decommissioning the cruisers.

“As I’ve said many times, as many of my colleagues have echoed today, you know we’re looking at this Battleforce 2045 – a plan that’s far off – a 355-ship goal that we’re never going to get to when we decommission more ships every year than we actually build, and it causes a great concern because I think there’s an urgency,” Luria said during Tuesday’s HASC hearing. “I mean, what are we going to do in 2025 to counter this threat?”

I think I have to agree with her. If we decommission ships faster than we build them, the Navy tends to shrink.

Great. Then they can use that $5B for more of Biden’s “infrastructure” program ... i.e. bail out more Democratic ran bankrupt cities.

Our de facto chicom masters have issued orders to Joepedo to decommission lots of ships in order to get the U.S. out of their territory... The entire South Pacific...

Definitely, to me, sounds very familiar...
I feel like we are reliving the 1930’s all over again...
Been there... Don’t like being there again...

Perhaps it is part of their plan to keep financing their super expensive toys which are mostly failures, and because they simply cannot recruit enough men to fill the slots. The shrinkage is deliberate ...

I do believe this democrat represents a military district. Otherwise she’d be like the rest of them.

The navy wastes massive amounts of money on woke BLM communist indoctrination, they wasted money on the idiotic Zumwalt destroyers, they wasted money persecuting and prosecuting Eddy Gallagher, they wasted massive amounts of money dumping rewinged and brand new A6Es so they could buy stealth junk. The Littoral “combat” ships are a national embarrassment.

These two congressmen were correct.

Transgender surgeries are more important than national security.

Get with the program, racist homophobes!

That money urgently needs to be spent on gender-reassignment surgeries.

“...I agree. What is the latest on these ships?”

They were built around a gun, the ammo for which ran $900,000 per shell. They will stop at three ships. They never issued a purchasing contract for the ammo. Presumably, they’ll replace the gun with something more useful. However, the ship was designed around that one thing, which may limit the modifications they can make.

Part of the military’s problems are, they don’t have a declared enemy. When we faced the Soviets, if they did something, we countered it. That kept them focused. But now the enemy is terrorism. Not a lot of role in that for a navy. Of course, there’s the Chinese, but I don’t think they are considered a comparable threat to the old Soviets. I suspect that’s because we buy so much stuff from them it seems inconceivable they would challenge us. That’s a mistake as the CCP needs hero’s and you get hero’s in wars. I’ve read the party is embarrassed they haven’t fought a war in fifty years with lots of dead hero’s.

The CCP can not survive in a world where the major power keeps insisting they have the rule of law and a free people. The party’s power comes from their absolute power over the courts and predetermined outcomes for civil and criminal trials. If they liberalize even a tiny amount, then the whole CCP power structure crumbles and they know that. It was glasnost that destroyed the Soviet regime. Once you give a tiny amount of power to the people, it’s like the wedge that breaks open the whole box.

This all means, the CCP will try to take back Taiwan. If anyone gets in their way, that power will get hurt. The CCP has decided the US and the West in general, does not have the stomach for the level of casualties required to prevent the seizure of Taiwan and they are probably right. We are used to “wars” where we lose a dozen men in a helicopter accident, not 50,000 and two carrier battle groups in an afternoon.

I suggest all read “To Rule the Waves” by Arthur Herman.

While focused on the rise (and fall) of the Royal Navy there is a lesson in there for the US of A.

If you are, as we have become, a maritime nation then the neglect of your Navy spells ultimate disaster and decline.

I was there for the 600 ship Navy and America truly ruled the waves. Today, I fear for this instuition that molded my life and meant so much to me. Sad.

I’m all for shrinking the number of ships because there are MANY sex change surgeries that need to be performed. Without those surgeries, our naval forces will be woefully unprepared for battle. Mothballing those ships will free up money for the important work of sex change.

One look at the Navy Decommissioning list is truly sad -

15 ships, including 7 Cruisers in 2022.

48 ships total by 2026, including USS NIMITZ.
