Does it come with a parachute? I’m actually half-serious. Many small civil aircraft, particularly sport-flying aircraft, have them built into the fuselage. I believe you can even add them onto existing fixed wing small planes too.
The personal drones under development all seem to include them. The personal drone developers from what I have seen are going for 8 blades (like 8 helicopter blades) so in case one or even 4 of them fail, it can still land. But if 5 of them fail or you run out of battery you can just pull the shoot.
Thanks!
These will be super safe once every jackass has one.
What’s more dangerous than riding a motorcycle? Riding a flying motorcycle.
But it’s worth it. :)
Yeah, I saw one of those and thought it would be great to visit my neighbor. He’s 2 miles away at the most as the crow flies but 6 miles driving, one way. The one I saw had a return home button so I wouldn’t have to worry about having one too many beers. It’s all gravel back roads and I rarely see another vehicle but I don’t want to wreck my own.
To think they want to spend trillions on “infrastructure” when we are so close to massive leaps and bounds in transportation advancements. Cars that self-navigate will make existing infrastructure last longer and with the capability to communicate with each other reduce congestion by constantly evaluating who needs to move left or right, exit or enter the road etc. They will automatically adjust speed and direction to accommodate other vehicles. It will be the end of the brake light!
And then the advent of personal drones, or I guess they call them passenger drones now that I did some more recent searching, we’re close to jetsons territory. Don’t really need much for roads or highways at all - at least not for passengers (maybe cargo drones are further away, can’t imagine a 57 foot trailer drone). Just like airplanes, stack the traffic at different elevations depending on direction of travel. And they too can communicate and have the same types of sensors to avoid collisions and re-route as needed. Point to point commuting from home to work and back, no roads needed just go “as the crow flies”. Assuming people will work, since, I gather, we’ll probably lose 50 million jobs to automation in the next generation too.
And then there is this...
“We plan to build only 20 Recreational SpeedersTM. Future production will be dedicated to military and government.”
.
Funny I just used the same phrase “as the crow flies” in my post above, I guess we’re thinking the same thing.
Battery life seems to be a big issue, but as you said, point to point travel is shorter than using roads so theoretically with improved battery technology it should have real decent practical advantages. Maybe a while before you get 300 mile range on them but for typical everyday stuff should be no problem. And you can always hop along, recharging (or battery swapping) along the way for longer trips.
Two miles, I can handle that even pretty buzzed. Drunk, maybe not. I tend to fall down when I’m drunk so I rarely get drunk anymore. But I sure wouldn’t want to carry a case of beer that distance ;-)
I tried to forget Galactica 1980.
Most people have I’m sure.
That’s interesting. Thanks. Seems more of an airplane though, or a glider with a propeller. Drones as I know them are more akin to helicopters. Vertical take-off and land. For personal transportation, they seem to be going with at least 8 propellers not just for lift but also for safety. With only 4 if you lose one you’re going down.
I really wanted to get a private pilot’s license and took some lessons and book reading - but then a surprise with the ol’ ticker I may be disqualified. I’m doing fine but on paper I may not be eligible for PPL. But for sports flying, a relatively new license, it can be had - just no passengers I think or at least no non-licensed passengers.
Two miles as the crow flies.
Twelve miles of curvy hilly gravel road that tears up tires too.
I could easily write a check for the flying motorcycle.
My check would bounce like a rubber ball, but I could write it.
Yup I remember that show.
Yahoo news. Usual lies. There are several gyrocopter flying motorcycles.
Yet more proof my tagline is accurate
