Is there a local IRS office you can visit?

Our small town (38,000) has one. Visiting is a surreal experience. There were two ‘agents’ and one armed guard. You walk in, the armed guard directs you to a sign in screen where you enter your problem. You then sit and wait. Under no circumstances can you do anything with your phone. If you take your phone out, you’ll be directed to leave the building.

Our tax question was unusual and complicated and the local people were useless. However, they should be able to deal with your problem. Accessing IRS through the phone is even stranger.

Good luck.

Thanks. The nearest field office is about 45 miles away. We haven’t gone there yet.

BINGO - in most cases involving detailed information omissions a visit to the local will clear it up immediately!
