Years ago I had a teacher who emphasized that “the data is” is one of two mistakes he didn’t want to see in our writing. The other was to incorrectly use “hopefully” to mean “I hope that.” One can “hopefully wait for the exam results,” but one can’t (or shouldn’t) say “Hopefully, I passed the exam.”
I hear you but you risk sounding like an egghead if you use “data” strictly by the book. Same deal with “media.”
I like John Stossel, but here he comes off as a lackey of the establishment.
