Jon Gruden's Raiders contract settlement still unresolved after coach's resignation in light of leaked emails (Cannot be posted due to FR rules)
get woke, go broke.
$500k won’t buy you a garage in the Bay Area. That’s why Davis moved to Vegas.
I’ve seen his haircut - the dude is FLAT broke!
Well, they took a gamble.
Outside of the Green Bay Packer community ownership group and a few old NFL families like the Maras and the Rooneys, the typical NFL owner is a rich guy who made a fortune in some other field and parlayed that fortune into NFL ownership.
Al Davis was an outlier. He was a coach who, through hook or crook, gradually acquired a controlling interest in the Raiders. How Davis pulled that off is quite convoluted tale, and it’s covered pretty well in Glenn Dickey’s book, “Just Win, Baby.” The Davis family’s wealth is all tied up in the team. So, yeah, Mark Davis is very likely the NFL’s poorest owner.
Anyone else think this whole thing is absurd?
He wrote these emails 10 years ago, when he wasn’t even employed by the Raiders. They were private emails. He insulted some people. So what? Why is this such a crime against humanity, that someone must lose their job?
How in the sam hill, did political correctness become such a strong force in our society?
Complet double standard on the NFL part. Guess who going to perform during the Superbowl? Dr. Dre, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Snoop Dogg
Some of the worst homophobic, racist and misogynistic lyrics by a group you’d find anywhere. And they rapped publicly to millions of people. Gruden had an expectation that his emails would be private, stupid, but the truth.
For an example read Dr. Dre’s ED-Ucation Lyrics (first song I looked up by him). No way can they posted on a site with civility.
When did the first amendment die?
Thanks I would like to read that book.
My limited knowledge is that Al Davis was a coach of the Raiders, when they were in the old American Football League. I’m sure franchise values for AFL teams before the merger with the NFL was fairly low. I bet Al Davis bought in at a bargain basement price compared to today’s franchise values. But the values of AFL franchises got quite a boost, when the merger with the NFL happened.
“Anyone else think this whole thing is absurd?”
Completely ridiculous.
“How in the sam hill, did political correctness become such a strong force in our society?”
We let them dig their heels in, then the “frog in the pot” applies.
The racist trope he wrote about the head of the NFLPA is what really crossed the line. No way he can command a locker room in a league that’s 70% black players.
Good question. The liberals push these ideas of “hate speech”, so that anything deemed to be hateful to the wrong people, will get you canceled nowadays, under cancel culture.
And what the heck happened here? These were private emails, not intended for public consumption. Yet somehow they get into the media, and now the offender is compelled to resign and be canceled.
I agree, but lets face it - we were into the woke world in 2018, when his contract was written, regardless of when the term “woke” first emerged. If his lawyers did not carve out some minimums for him, they should be sued for malpractice. My guess is he sees 2 years of the 6 years of outstanding compensation.
Some teams will henceforth add provisions for exactly this kind of thing. Coaches with adequate clout will eliminate those provisions in negotiation. Unless the NFL puts them into a league standard contract.
And Dre was a member of NWA, don’t forget those lyrics.
But, he’s not white so it’s okay.
Eminem is white, but gets the black handshake of approval.
Yeah, you should check out Dickey’s book. It’s a good read. Davis actually gained control of the team in the 1972, so that was after the AFL-NFL merger. IIRC, there was originally a partnership group, and David only was given a sliver to coach. But he managed to get other owners to give him voting control of their shares etc. It was crazy. I remember it was 1972, because there was a story about one of the managing partners going on a vacation to watch the Olympics in Munich, and Davis using that opportunity to vote the guy out or something. It was all pretty sleazy, but that was Al Davis.
It seems like the opposite in this case.
He may have owned a house for a long time.
Wonder if any other heads will roll at ESPN.
