Man trapped for two days rescued from Britain’s deepest cave

240 rescuers...from at least eight teams across the U.K. brought up the 40-year-old man on a stretcher Monday to the entrance of Ogof Ffynnon Ddu, also known as the Cave of the Black Spring, 54 hours after he fell.

“The caver was very unlucky here. He’s an experienced caver, a fit caver. And it was a matter of putting his foot in the wrong place,” said Peter Francis, the spokesman for the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team. “He wasn’t in a dangerous part of the cave, it’s just something moved from under him.”

The cave system is located in the Brecon Beacons mountain range in south Wales near the former quarrying village of Penwyllt. It is 300 meters (984 feet) deep, making it among the deepest in the U.K. The cave system is also among the U.K.’s longest, stretching for more than 30 miles (48 kilometers).

How could he fall 984 feet down and live? Was he all the way down to the bottom? Inquiring minds want to know (mine).

For many people, the 984 foot fall alone would be enough to trigger a heart attack. Since he was ‘experienced’, he likely had taken deep spills before. He must have had some device still allowing for communication as he was found, even with his spine and other parts of the body wrecked.

Spelunking: Cave exploration for fun and fitness.
Caving: Cave exploration for collection of scientific data.

The rescuers then asked him “Where’s Timothy?”
He did look well fed.....

To answer that question: My guess is he fell into a body of water deep enough to splash w/o smacking against a stone floor.

I would say this cavers “experience” is proof that experience counts for $h!t in the caving business.
And I would add that he is VERY LUCKY. He got out alive!

Possibly not a vertical drop but more of a steep angled descent with a lot of sliding and bouncing into things.

We are vacationing in the Harz Mountains for a week during the Easter Vacation. Will are planning on visiting a nearby village called Rübeland (Our hotel is in Wernigerode) and tour Baumann's Cave and Hermann's Cave which are located there (Hopefully they will be open).

Germany has a program to help the economy of the travel industry, by paying for the hotel stay of people who qualify. We got approved (by using a little creative accounting) and booked a week vacation that costs 700+ euros for only 90 euros. ☺️🤘

Qualify = 2-G (geimpft oder genesen [vor nicht mehr als sechs Monaten])?

984 feet? After about 100 feet he’d reach terminal velocity and he’d be doing about 75 mph. Hitting a rock wall at that speed is going to hurt.
