Sorry, haters. ‘No Way Home’ is a joyous valentine to Spider-Man movies and their fans

The plot of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is set in motion by a threatened bout of collective amnesia, which is fitting because I could barely remember anything that happened in the last of these movies. That’s odd, because I definitely saw it. (I’m pretty sure I reviewed it.) Fortunately, like most installments of endless cinematic franchises, this latest Spidey adventure seldom stops explaining itself or referencing its predecessors (more on that in a bit). Within moments you are helpfully reminded of how 2019’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home” ended, with that belligerent hack journalist J. Jonah Jameson (Spidey mainstay J.K. Simmons) exposing the famous webslinger’s true identity to the entire world. And most thoughtlessly of all, he didn’t even think to preface it with a spoiler warning.

The people at Sony Pictures, by contrast, have taken their usual care to warn journalists not to spill the secrets of “No Way Home,” expecting us to behave with more scrupulousness and care than some of their own marketing materials. I’ll proceed as cautiously as I can, with the caveat that your spoiler sense may tingle differently from my spoiler sense.

If you’re that concerned about plot details, I implore you: Put down this review and read something else.

Does this new Spiderman movie have any political undertones we should be talking about? Is it, e.g., "woke?"

Regards,

My man, until Critical Drinker (and Yellow Flash, The Quartering, etc,) have a peek, I won’t get at least an honest opinion.

I will have to look up Yellow Flash.

My husband likes movies. So I try to take him at least once a month. Just us, no kids, no pets, no parents. But finding movies that did not leave us going "what the heck was THAT pile of... stuff" was a challenge.

I don't demand that every movie I go to be a masterpiece, that would be expecting too much but I do expect to be entertained.

And then I stumbled across Critical Drinker and he recommended movies that were what we were looking for, maybe dumb, maybe silly, maybe flawed but always fun.

All I think of with new movies is which former manly man becomes homosexual, who is the black scientist that saves the workd, who is the hot 100lblesbian who can combat 100 fit men, and most important How many ways do we hate whitey. why would I waste my time watching this garbage when I could polish my old toe nail clippings?

Priceless.

Agree. Not every movie has to be a masterpiece. One can watch a movie and enjoy it for what it is. There is so much trash out there; woke garbage, stuff that is a slave to liberal messages, poor writing and acting, or the ruining of existing IPs that are spun by millenial idiots (or Kathleen Kennedy, etc) into crap.

It’s not just Independent films anymore, that are about gay cowboys eating pudding.

Yes, and I pay heed to anything the LATimes says about as much as I pay heed to Rotten Tomatoes......

Sigh.   I have avoided watching any Spiderman movies since the first Tobey Maguire film because I didn't want to watch any out of sequence.   Now there are so many Spiderman movies that I'll never watch any others at all.

I have watched all the Spiderman movies and to see them all come together is a great event.

It is huge for Hollywood studios to come together like this. Big credit is given to Sony, Marvel and Disney pulling this off without turning it into a social justice piece.

The Drinker won me over...someone (you?) pointed him out to me the other day, and OMG. I regard him as an accurate barometer of movie fare...at least for ME, which is all that counts...:)

I had never heard of him. I watched a bunch of his videos since the day before yesterday, and...every single one of them exactly mirrored my views.

So, now...if I want to see if I should watch a movie, I will check him first!

When the critics like something - it makes me worry

I read rotten green tomatoes for their reviews. I don’t pay attention to the critics reviews but rather to the audience reviews.

Generally if you see a picture with an audience review of over 90—you’re not going to feel like the movie stole your money and time.

Above 95 the chances are higher that you will be genuinely entertained.

It looks like critical drinker has some of the same chops.
He’s hearing good things about spider man. But he has not seen it yet himself.
