Tech PING! Thinking I need a camera security system. Has anyone looked at them? Thoughts? I want a stand alone camera system with night vision and recording capacity. Something that would work with my wifi? Something that works in the dark? (we live in the woods)

Is there such a duck?

Look at WYZE systems for an independent setup that you can monitor from anywhere. Has all the bells and whistles and is an easy DIY system.

I bought one of these a couple of years ago.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FSFXZZ3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I connected it to a wireless wifi repeater and hid it in the basement rafters. It stores a month of video on a one gigabyte hard drive before it gets written over. I can connect to it from my phone and see what is going on. No monthly fees, just stored in the rafters on the hard drive. Two of the cameras have been outside for two years and still work fine.

Amazon is awash in standalone cameras/DVR setups, almost all of which include IR lighting for nighttime recording.

You'll have to sling a lot of wires around your home, though.

Then there is SimpliSafe, Ring, Nest, and Blink that are all cloud based cameras that provide remote storage of video in case a burglar or a fire is intent on destroying evidence on-site.

Yes. Search amazon and read the reviews. Most will handle 4 or 8 cameras. They can record in full color even at night. They have a box that takes a hard drive but often, those are sold separately so you can choose what size you want.

Everything’s pretty much made in china.

If you get wifi enabled, you can check your cameras remotely via a phone app but keep in mind, that goes across the internet.

Another option is Home Assistant and buying and configuring components.

Check out trail cameras. They work in the dark, and are motion sensitive.

If you get an active IR security camera, make sure the DVR system has the AI body heat detection software. Otherwise your going to get DVR recordings constantly any time the wind blows trees or bugs and even snow and rain motion

Yes, we have the Cobra 4-channel (4 camera) system. It works great at night or day. It will upload to the Cloud through your Wi-Fi, will save video and pictures to the SD card, will ping your phone if it detects movement, has audio and voice capabilities, and more than I can mention.

I have the app that goes with it on my phone and if I’m in Knoxville I can tune to the camera that is in the house, talk to my dogs over the microphone, and keep an eye on them while I’m gone.

In addition, they utilize IR, motion detection, and excellent quality night time imaging.

I had my entire system installed and set up in 20 minutes...

Check out the Lorex Fusion systems. They can do it all! Spend some bucks on PTZ cams as well.

We bought about a dozen of wyze cams when they were the cheapest security cams available. They are used with a phone app and can be programmed to alert you when they detect motion. We prefer the ones with “panning”, they will actually follow people that they detect in the picture. We also put inexpensive micro-SD cards in them that record a couple of days of video before cycling back over the recording. We also use cheap enclosures on the ones we use outside.

The WyzeCams do not yet require any type of paid subscription that we are aware of.

If we are watching television using our Amazon fireTV sticks you can just say into the remote “show front door” or whatever camera you want to see if you are getting an alert on your phone.

We also have three “Ring cameras”, but they cost us $10 a month and the service is a constantly changing joke. Unfortunately they cost us many $100s of dollars. We also have an older system with high definition cameras, a controller, hard drive, and also an app that we bought at Sam's club. It is much harder to set up because cables for every camera have to go back to the controller. Very good cameras, good controller, but very expensive, and not as convenient to set up.

Unfortunately, most of the WyzeCams are not currently on sale. Here is the cheapest. It is not the type we have, and I don't know if there are outdoor enclosures available. It is $20 if you clip the 20% off coupon on the Amazon Ad.

Ubiquiti works very well and you don’t need a monthly fee.
Might be too high end for your usage.
You will need a firewall, a POE switch and CAT5 wiring.
A wifi based solution is really NOT secure.
