The concept of a simulated reality or an alternative reality has been popular in science fiction since the earliest days of the genre. Either the protagonist falls though a portal into an alternative reality, usually similar to his own, or he discovers that he is living in a simulated reality controlled by others. The goal in both scenarios is to discover the actual reality and who is behind the deception.
Inevitably, that is the point of the alternative reality. The point is to deceive people so they do not notice something important to the deceivers. The movie The Matrix put this to good use by having the protagonist wake from a computer simulation to learn that he had been living in an artificial world. That world was created by the machines that had destroyed human civilization and enslaved humanity as batteries.

I feel the same. Every time I see half of society with masks, companies firing unvaxxed and lies propagated by these idiots I’m ready to pack up and buy a place in the middle of nowhere. It’s been two years and all the information we need is for all to see yet they prefer the “safety” of their masks and unlimited boosters…sort of a denial of truth and living in an alternate life because they’re afraid to face life as it was.
The cell phones are reality. The outside world doesn’t exist. That’s why people are drawn to the cell phones. Cell phones are a more natural interface to the matrix.
There are too many glitches in the outside world. Every year we watch the trees die, only to spring to life again in spring. Space is black but the sky is blue. The moon is larger on the horizon. Ant’s carry 20 times their own body weight. Joe Biden beat Trump. There is just no way this stuff would happen in reality.
Personally, I’m sitting here in my recliner, attempting to hack the matrix. If I’m successful, I’ll have matrix riches beyond compare. Not to mention a chiselled body that Mr. Universe would be envious of.
Don’t worry, I’ll be a very wise, very generous, and very very rich ruler.
