Motorcycles. They’re often referred to as “donorcycles” for good reason.

See #36...That describes that victim perfectly. Young and stupid. Big difference between that dead young man and seasoned, experienced motorcycle riders.

A college friend of mine said that there are two types of bikers: those who have laid down a motorcycle, and those who will lay down a cycle.

I’ve known at least a half dozen people who died in crashes; only one was due to another driver. The rest were due to excessive speed relative to road conditions.

One guy I knew failed to negotiate a curve on the Angeles Crest Highway. He survived only because he was wearing his helmet. Another rider wiped out at 130 mph on the 210 late at night. He also survived with a broken collarbone and nasty road rash.

Bikes doing 100+ are common.

Btw, 80,000++ pound tractor trailer rigs are often seen doing near 90mph nowadays on the open roads. I think people should be much more concerned with them, than some 500 pound motorcycle.

About 45% of all accidents that involve a motorcycle happen when another vehicle makes a left-hand turn in front of them. (Intersections).

Not my statistics, but it just shows nearly half are caused by people driving cars that are not paying attention and they simply fail to yield the right of way to the motorcycle.

I don’t doubt the statistic. That is exactly what happened to my friend who was hit by a car. I’m just saying that of the bikers I know who died or had serious accidents, it wasn’t due to other drivers.

By the way, how would that stolen motorcycle accident in LA be counted in the statistic: was the driver turning left at fault, or would it be due to the excessive speed of the thief?

Same experience.

Began riding at 18.

At 46 I realized this wasn't safe. Hahaha

Slow learner I guess.

Parked the bike and then 3 months later sold it. Once you're scared, you can't ride right anymore. I rode all over the world, even took a trip from Germany to Egypt once (around Mediterranean). I had a CB400N (first bike), GPZ550D, VFR750R, Vulcan 1500, ZRX1200R.

I had a teen pass us and crash into car making a legal left turn. All that CPR training I had came in handy as I got to pump his chest! For several years he had mental problems till he died.

My cousin and her husband, bike riders for years, were going to a family reunion when, in the night, they topped a hill in the road and ran into the back of a semi stalled on the other side. Both killed.

I personally like four wheels under me.

I’m not sure, but probably the person who stole the vehicle. Like drunks, even if they get rear ended, they’ll find the drunk at fault as they should have never been behind the wheel in the first place..

Yeah: Graphic: car turns left into innocent motorcycle rider.

Seen it...You should see the video showing this guy landing on the sidewalk in front of a store. He was dead before impact.

Note, it was yet another intersection and a left turner. Same thing could have happened if the motorcyclist was traveling at 40. Not as severe, but likely just as deadly.

My husband was a hard-core rider - took all the safety classes over several decades - could have taught them as well.

I always told him I wasn’t worried about him when he was out on the bike, I worried about the idiot drivers out there making the roads unsafe.

Every time I heard “motorcycle down” on the traffic report, I almost had a heart attack. Passed a mangled motorcycle on the road once, stopped the car and started running and screaming - looked just like my husband’s bike. Cops had to hold me back - I asked what kind of bike it was and the cop told me the model and make and it wasn’t ours (bike was registered in both our names). I don’t think whoever was on that bike survived - cops didn’t know. I felt an overwhelming relief.

Husband rode a motorcycle until the day he died, it brought him such joy and happiness.

My husband would have killed for that bike.

We were shopping for an Indian for him before he died, it was his life dream to own one.

He wanted me to get a Scout so we could ride together.

Sorry to hear about your cousin and her husband. It can happen quick.

Speed = reaction time, the faster you go the less you have.

Worked with a guy that took a trip on his bike from where I am in north Fla to California then up to Washington state then over to Sturgis for the rally then back here and never got a scratch.

Not long after he got back he sold his wife’s bike and was riding it over to the buyers house and got rear-ended by a car pretty much in his own neighborhood.

The kid was messing with his phone of course.

He survived but back and neck injuries from the accident caused him to have to quit riding all together.

A lot of bike accidents happen that way, rear-ended by a car that didn’t see the bike.

motorcycles are between 20 and 40 times more dangerous than cars when measured on a per-mile-driven basis.

The usual caveats for all statistics

Hi.

Didn’t Duane Allman and Barry Oakley die in motorcycle accidents?

Was it in Macon? Same place a couple years apart?

Scary.

Riding in traffic these days is suicide. It was bad enough back in the day. I’ve been “in the wind” over half a century, but I really pick and choose my times now. I will not ride on holidays or weekends as that’s the worst around here. Cage drivers are idiots for the most part, they will kill you. New cars have too many distractions built in, thirteen inch screens on the dashboard and everyone has a texting machine in their hand. I pick and choose my times and would never commute on two wheels again. That’s why motorcyclists are called “organ donors”.

I tell others, you have to have a mindset that you’re invisible and can’t be seen. If one has that mindset and takes it real serious, they’ll likely won’t become a statistic.

Riding is not like these people in cars, most of which are really not qualified to drive anyway as they sit on their car couches listening to tunes while eating Cheetos. I’m sure you’re aware, riding a bike safely takes 100% concentration on all the vehicles in front of and around you, as well as watching approaching road conditions, etc. It’s no place for day dreaming, slow reactions or making stupid unsafe decisions.

In my earlier years, I had 2 Hendersons, 6 pre-WWI Harleys, an Iver Johnson, a Curtiss, a couple of Whizzers, a Crocker, an Excelsior, a Merkel, and an ACE. Wish I had kept them in my exotic and sports car collections.
