A New York City good Samaritan proved that chivalry isn’t dead after she discovered a wallet containing thousands of dollars in Times Square — and got it back to its rightful owner.

The noble deed occurred Wednesday morning while Honduras native Eduardo Martinez was walking through the tourist-inundated area to get to work, NBC New York reported. During his commute, the man reportedly dropped his wallet, which contained $4,000 cash along with standard wallet items, near Broadway and 49th Street.

Upon realizing what had transpired, the panicked man returned to the crowded area, whereupon he was approached by two police officers. They explained that they’d been given a wallet by an unnamed woman who had been commuting to work at the same time as Martinez.

I’m surprised the cops didn’t seize the cash and call the guy a drug dealer.

This kind of honesty is commonplace in my culture, or was. I can understand why a Honduran, or anyone from almost anywhere else on the planet, would be astonished.

Now ask why he has that much cash. Because he is illegal and can not open a bank account?

Honduran?

Lots and LOTS of cash in one spot?

Hhmmmm.....

Surprised he lets his face on these. For multiple reasons. Including carrying that much makes you a marked man.

Very nice of this woman, who was complete by being “anonymous”. But I’d like to know so she can get some credit.

I’d be surprised if illegals can’t open accounts.

If one believes they will someday be called to account for their actions, then doing the right thing is not difficult.

It used to be chivalry was something practiced by gentleman who respected and admired woman and treated them nicely and according to etiquette. In today’s world you would be sexist to apply it in its usual way which in this case would not be the proper context.

Because he's been watching the World TechnoDictatorship in action in Canada and Russia?

He must be illegal.

A legacy US citizen would have had their money seized.

If I see a $20 bill on the sidewalk, I walk right by it. Why? I know it ain't mine.

"Oh, but someone else will just pick it up."

That's their soul's problem.

Thanks, Dad.

If you find something, hold on to it and find the rightful owner yourself.

Years ago I found some very valuable jewelry in the ladies room of the Ritz Carleton. I turned it in at the front desk. A few days later I called to see if the rightful owner had been found. No way. They had no record that it had ever been turned in.

Two people were wronged - the rightful owner the person who found the jewelry and the finder who should have held onto it until making sure it got into the rightful owners hands.

Several years ago a story like this was posted, and someone commented that they’d keep it and what a dummy the guy was for returning it. Don’t remember who it was. He got plenty of scorn but didn’t care. It was finders keepers to him.

Once I reported that my bank’s ATM was spitting our $50 bills instead of the $20 bills it should have. It took awhile for someone to take me seriously as I explained the problem. The young clerk was amazed I had reported it and insisted on returning the $310 too much it had given me (yes, I confirmed the withdrawal figure was counting $20s and shoving out $50s).. In response, I quoted some couplets I learned a long time ago: “I have to live with myself and so, I want to be fit for myself to know. I want to be able, as days go by, always to look myself straight in the eye. I don’t want to stand with the setting sun and hate myself for the things I’ve done.” It’s part of a poem I memorized decades ago and had stood me in good stead all that time.
