vanity

Posted on 03/15/2022 12:14:54 AM PDT by Mount Athos

For 25# bags of rice/beans, which size mylar bag & oxygen absorbers and where to mail order?

Can i use "gamma vault" as is or is the seal inadequate?

Thank you, Sorry for vanity

I’ve gotten my mylar online at amazon IIRC and oxygen absorbers too....but I don’t use my mylar much....I use canning jars or large pickle jars.

FYI

Wifey has been nomming our old canned stores. Use by dates: 2009-2014. Kirkland Chicken, Kirkland Roast Beef, Various tunas, peas, corn, peanut butter (reg and natural) all just fine.

Same here. Amazon.

I bought the heavier bags to fit a 6 gallon bucket. I seal them with a 2 ft aluminum level across the top of the bucket with an iron.

By leaving the lid off the bucket overnight I can see the vacuum seal as the oxygen is used up.

I do buckets in batches of 10 to use an entire pack of 10 O2 absorbers.

This way the mylar bags are resealable several times and still fill a 5 or 6 gallon bucket.

Anyone experiment with making O2 absorbers. The bags and absorbers are all made in china.

Cans I have inadvertently missed on rotation that either leaked or got a tinny taste/smell within 1 year of use by date:
Tomato sauce-tinny
Pineapple Juice- leaky sticky mess
Ranch Style Beans- bulging cans

More info:

I have a lot of canned food, but I want to get more shelf life for rice/beans I buy locally.
Looking for specific suggestions on bucket types, mylar bag, o2 absorbers. Hoping to set up some other families here as well

I have several gamma seal lids that I use as current stock for ready access. But they are way too expensive..

I purchased good clean used food grade buckets for $1 each, but purchased new lids to get a good seal.

The bucket is just protecting the mylar bag from puncture.

The prices of product. If available. Has skyrocketed.

I try to use whole grain and beans with low moisture that can double as seeds if needed.

While I have a nitrogen tank to flush, I rarely use it. It’s good for porous items.

This is a good web site for advice on long term food storage:

https://readysquirrel.com/foods-stored-in-a-5-gallon-bucket/

I use 5 gallon, food grade buckets and gama seal lids for easier access and reuse. Usually I buy them at Tractor Supplies, but I have ordered them from Amazon too. The price is about the same.

I ordered 5 gallon mylar bags and 2000 cc oxygen absorbers from Amazon.

The absorbers are iron. The iron reacts with the O2 to form rust. Do a search to get finer details on DIY.

I think the joke is about operational security.

I have researched it. Even purchased some steel wool without the oil coating that is on most steel wool.

The absorbers purchased work really well. Wondering if they mix something else to activate the rapid rust.
