‘Gaslit’ review: Julia Roberts humanizes Watergate in new Starz series
Twinscities ^ | 04/30/2022 | Michael Phillips

Behind every great political scandal, there are players whose stories get shoved to the side by the first, second and even third drafts of history.

“Gaslit,” overpacked but compelling, shoves back — though not quite hard enough. The actors traverse a wide variety of styles, from sardonic satire to raw sincerity. While that stylistic range can feel indecisive in some episodes, it’s an awfully good cast.

With a deft balance of social cunning and justifiable paranoia, Julia Roberts takes the lead as “mouth of the south” Martha Mitchell. Her public statements regarding Richard Nixon’s ineptly corrupt administration helped bring down a presidential second-term hopeful and various minions intent on smearing the opposition party. Across the eight-part Starz series (seven episodes were available for preview), Roberts occasionally has to fight for screen time in what is an ensemble piece, not a star vehicle. Sean Penn plays her husband, Nixon crony and U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell, encased in a misjudged load of prosthetics. (More on that shortly.)

Wasn't George Mitchell's wife a drunk?? I don't know why they have to keep bringing up water gate over and over again.

Watergate was nothing compared to the Hunter Biden / Joe Biden corruption. Nothing.

I watched the first episode.

I'm not positive, but I think they may be using Silent Coup as their underlying theme.

They make it quite clear that she was a call girl for important people.

They portray John Dean as a decent enough guy pre-breakin.

G Gordon Liddy they portray as... G Gordon Liddy.

It's worth watching. It may turn into a partisan bashing, but the first episode shows promise of actually telling the truth.

You’re thinking of Martha Mitchell, wife of Nixon’s AG John Mitchell

Even less than nothing compared to Obama’s using US intel agencies to spy on the Trump campaign.

"Watergate was nothing compared to the Hunter Biden / Joe Biden corruption. Nothing."

Not sure even Hunter Biden / Joe Biden corruption was up to Obama/Clintons corruption.

I always find it funny when a scandal is called “worse than watergate”. Pretty much EVERY scandal is worse than watergate.

I don’t recall Richard Nixon taking millions of dollars in bribes from three foreign countries whose interests aren’t the same as ours. In fact, I don’t remember Richard Nixon taking a cent in bribes from anyone, friend or foe. Hollywood, the “press”, a disgruntled FBI senior who got passed over for a job as head of that agency (and whose family decades later thought they were entitled to money for it), and the Dems brought down a president elected by a landslide which enabled the stab in the back to South Vietnam. They are rather silent in the evidence of massive corruption and vote stealing for Mr. Biden, aren’t they??

” I don’t know why they have to keep bringing up water gate over and over again.”

Take Communism. I say that as far as that subject is concerned the danger is great to America. In the Hiss case they got the secrets which enabled them to break the American secret State Department code. They got secrets in the atomic bomb case which enabled them to get the secret of the atomic bomb five years before they would have gotten it by their own devices. And I say that any man who called the Alger Hiss case a red herring isn’t fit to be President of the United States.

I say that a man who, like Mr. Stevenson, has pooh-poohed and ridiculed the Communist threat in the United States — he said that they are phantoms among ourselves. He has accused us that have attempted to expose the Communists, of looking for Communists in the Bureau of Fisheries and Wildlife. I say that a man who says that isn’t qualified to be President of the United States. And I say that the only man who can lead us in this fight to rid the Government of both those who are Communists and those who have corrupted this Government is Eisenhower,

Richard Nixon

I was going to say, the Left owes Nixon a posthumous apology. What he and his people did was NOTHING compared to what was done to Trump in 2016.

Even the old “panty raid” was “worse than watergate”. 🙂

I'm still trying to figure out why Watergate was such a big thing. These "Political" offices are broken into every damn year...and nothing happens.

19 minutes of a tape?? And he lied....I believe it was FDR who was asked if he would lie...and he said...without a doubt...if the "occasion" arose.

Sean Penn??? Couldn’t they find any old fat, short actors to play that part? Robert deNiro (gag!), Michael Douglas, John Goodman? The list is long.
