John Franklin Ross Obiturary (Author of Unintended Consequences)

ohn was a world-class expert and instructor on shooting, firearms, and ammunition. Having been introduced to gun culture at a young age by his uncle Graves Gladney, also of St. Louis, John became a nationally recognized prodigy in shooting and designing firearms and ammunition by the time he graduated from high school.

It was a lifelong passion for John, who as an adult became a world-renowned and highly respected expert in many different areas of the global firearms and ammunition industries. His dedication to gun culture and to the history of firearms in America led to his ongoing work as one of the tireless pro-Second Amendment lobbying activists in Jefferson City over a period of more than ten years. His work there was largely responsible for the State of Missouri’s ultimate reversal of its existing legislation and its subsequent adoption of the constitutional carry statute, and relaxed purchasing regulations for Missouri citizens.

Before that, in 1995, John published his first and best-known novel Unintended Consequences, which has sold over 100,000 copies as of 2022. The book is—within the worldwide sociological sub-group known informally as “the Gun Culture”—one of the most popular and influential books in the long history of that demographic, and the book has been published in several languages and sold in over 100 countries.

John was working tirelessly on a sequel to Unintended Consequences when he passed, and the publishers have already committed to examining the unfinished work and doing everything they can to get it published within a year.

Unintended Consequences is a fine book.. I still use some of the quotes from the book.. For example, whenever I see Nasty Nancy Pelosi, I’ll say, “It’s time to feed the hogs”. :)

Can’t remember the exact words but something to the effect of “the first one costs everything, everything after that is free”

Words worth memorizing

Never heard of him or his book. What shocked me was the title. I wrote a science fiction novel in early 2000s with the exact same title. Still unpublished and a work in progress with hopes to publish in next year or two.

RIP... I have a copy of UC on the book shelf behind me right now. It’s kinda worn and dog-eared at this point.

And yes, required reading.

You can find copies still being sold. They’re just expensive as all get out. $95 on Amazon for a paperback. $200 for hardcover.

Out of print, but apparently still in demand.

This book is largely why I got in to reloading my own ammo...

Worth repeating. I think he OK'd this when the book was out of print, and pretty much unobtainable. I ended up buying 2 copies (one signed) at https://stlccw.com/product-category/books, even though I had the PDF, and had eventually converted that into an EPUB so it worked better on my ereader.

The Fact that he was OK with having the book distributed via the PDF shows that he was a genuinely stand up guy. I'm sorry he has passed on. Really am looking forward to his sequel.

It was reprinted as a trade paperback.$44 here.... If you want it I suspect you might want to act quickly. :-)

I have a mostly pristine, signed (extremely rare) First Edition. As I recall, there were only a few hundred.

It might be time to sell it...
