The 4th of July kicked off in Aptos with their annual "World's Shortest Parade."
The parade started at the corner of Soquel Drive and State Park Drive and ended at Trout Gulch Road. This is the second event post-pandemic.
The parade is only a half-mile long, but that didn't stop people from packing the streets of Aptos. The parade was established in 192 by the Aptos Ladies Evening Society before being taken over by the Aptos Chamber of Commerce.
Established in 192? This thing’s got legs.
It’s probably not as long as it sounds - they most likely mean AD 192, not 192 BC.
Had no idea Aptos was such an ancient settlement
I left the SC valley a few years ago and had no idea how many public 7/4 celebrations there were in places like Aptos, Monterey and Carmel.
😆😂🤣
I don't know about that - I remember a parade in Fort Davis, TX that might give 'em a walk for the money...
;>)
Oh, well that changes everything!
Goes sound Greek
My college town invented the boombox parade when the scheduled marching band backed out. The local radio station agreed to broadcast Sousa marches and the parade marchers all carried boomboxes tuned to that station.
It was a hoot.
1/2 mile is the world’s shortest parade? Our kids’ Halloween parade was one block. And it’s probably on the long side of the median.
