Yeah. I should probably get a pole pruner. Climbing the ladder with a chainsaw is losing its appeal.

“Oh He has a battery powered chainsaw? Oh that is your problem right there!!

Dude you should have gotten the gas ones”

Actually for what he is looking for a battery power saw is perfect. I have a Dewalt 20V that I’ve had for about three years and it’s great for pruning and light yard cleanup after a storm. It’s also very quite and can be used with one hand which is great if you are climbing and need to communicate with someone on the ground.

I also have a Stihl MS-461, MS-271 and MS-170. The 170 is the only one that gives me any issues which kind of stinks because it is nice and light. When it’s cold it always fires up in two or three pulls but if I stop it and try to fire it back up when the engine is hot... no dice and I have to wait for it to cool down again.

we just had seven 35-40 foot trees taken out. the company uses Stihl. Tree bases were almost twice as wide as the saw length so they sat on the ground and just chewed up the tree trunk round and round till it lifted off with the crane. They put a whole 35 foot maple tree thru the $200,000 chipper in one piece. impressive.

We like this trimmer . . not very expensive and does the work we need done.

All America is experiencing a paradigm shift of sorts and it translates into other areas of commerce as well.

Well I have a Stihl FS-110 trimmer and have never had an issue but apparently you will need to be darn sure that you want it as you can’t return it.

Seriously though, although the power head is heavy I can use it on tall grass and it’s got enough torque to clear the itself and stay spinning at a high RPM. It was not inexpensive but I’ve had it since 2016, its my go-to and still running strong.

Just my .02 and people have strong opinions, but I think Stihl is overpriced. Very overpriced.

I have Stihl’s, Husqvarna, and Echo. The XP Husky saws are beasts, but for the money and average homeowner it is very difficult to beat an Echo.

I have a little Echo 310 that I use to limb all kinds of trees from huge to small. I got it on craigslist for 100 dollars about 12 years ago and it always goes in the gator with me even when I have the big boys. The little thing has been a tank and its often a relief for this old guy to switch to a 14” lightweight saw after running the big boys with 24” or 28” bars to prune limbs (which I often burn in the wood stove).

“however I recently purchased 2 electrics, a big and a small, and I am very pleased with their performance.”

Interesting. I’ve wondered about a larger battery powered chainsaw.

Speaking of working with trees, here’s a site by a guy that’s 90% personality and 10% actual information.

He has lots of videos.

Speaking of “personality tradesman”, here a couple of additional sites of these characters:

Welder, 90% personality. One video tells us how to eat crawdads. Lots of videos.

Sawmill site with a chick narrator. She’s a very good narrator and nice to look at. I think most of the setup is actually for real. Lots of videos.

In the home chainsaw market I think Stihl falls a little short of the other guys while charging more. They’re trying to sell homeowners based on the reputation of their heftier chainsaws.

Battery powered chainsaws are the way to go for trimming trees around the yard. So much cleaner and easier than a gas motor.

~~~
Yep.
No more mixing gas and oil (or buying mixed) and a lot less noise. You still have to use bar chain oil on the electrics. I have found that a battery saws-all with wood-cut blades are actually nice, except you have to cut something solid, because the reciprocating blade will just oscillate anything that’s loose, but sawzall blades quite a bit cheaper than chainsaw chains. They’re basically disposable.
I have two old Makita battery-powered tools (drill, right-angle drill) with the long, skinny battery. Bought them around 1980. The tools are still going strong, but the battery packs are very weak now. I have a "newer" Makita drill/driver I bought about 15 years ago that I use most often now, but I can't part with the old stuff!
I've also got an original Black and Decker DustBuster that I really like.
Companies are selling replacement aftermarket batteries for those tools. I bought a couple of replacement batteries for the DustBuster and it continues to work great. I found the batteries on Amazon and eBay has lots, too
Hahahaha……………….
Stihl is a great product.
Comparing a store that is required by the manufacturer to have a service department (authorized Stihl retailer has to have it) to a big box store is apples and oranges and anyone who has spent anytime at all on FR should be able to see the difference in the corporate models. One is centered around service and the ability to support the products sold. The other is a box store specifically designed to sell cheap, mostly Chinese trash that can be sent in a big box (shipping container) and is a major contributing factor to the cronyism between the government and big business.
Support you local small businesses when possible. Its hard for me to imagine that after the last election and the COVID scamdemic regular critical thinking readers of FR could be blind to this.
Your wife made a mistake and you want someone else to correct it. Reminds me of something……..
Why get on here and bash a company and a business model that actually is a helpmate to liberty? Why support the drone style one size fits all mentality of the distant corporate controlled big box style retailer who will leave your town in one second vs. the other locally owned/managed that carries parts and supplies service for a product that will need both?
Go to Lowes Life and Home Desperate and ask them for a part for their saw or for some on the spot service to get it running again after sitting half the season.
Sorry I don’t mean to be a prick but watching the big corporate giants manipulated by their friends in the government should galvanize us against them and support smaller more agile personal locally owned or managed stores when possible.
“It is what it is”
Ummm, yeah but its not what you say it is.
Stihl is still by far cheaper in the long run and much of there stuff is better than it was twenty years ago.
“take it back, tell them it does not work”
Great idea. Perhaps I could have subtly sabotaged it. The store guy probably wouldn’t care as he’d just pass on the alleged defective product to Stihl.
But I’m reasonably happy with my mighty-mouse pruner.
I’ve been running my Stihl chainsaw and FS90 trimmer for over 20 years. The only parts so far are bars and chains for the saw; trimmer heads, gas cap, and priming bulb for the trimmer. Spark plugs too. I keep four chains handy and sharpened.
I’ve looked at their trim saws, but haven’t splurged. I have a saw attachment for the trimmer.
I don’t look at the homeowner models. I don’t think they can take the abuse I give my saw and trimmer.
Stihl only sells through their dealer network. I have a very good dealer nearby.
You should try climbing a tree with a pole trimmer.
