“Does anyone have any preferences for string trimmers?”

redmax ... the lower-end ones are rebadged pulons ... husky bought red max in 2007, so you’d have to investigate carefully what you’re actually buying

https://www.redmax.com/us/products/trimmers/

their heads suck so i put an oregon speed feed head on my redmax ... best string is Oregon 22-805 Gatorline Heavy-Duty Professional Magnum 3-Pound Spool of .105-Inch-by-564-Feet Square String Trimmer Line

I buy everything with credit cards that is of any consequence. That way you can always call the credit card company and tell them that they’re trying to screw you. The merchant doesn’t really care for it when you do that, but too bad.

“That way you can always call the credit card company and tell them that they’re trying to screw you.”

How about telling the credit card company to stop payment? Do they do that without asking questions?

I wouldn’t stop payment for the hassle that I described in an earlier post.

By the way, the operator’s manual for that little pruner is a real laugh. Plastered with safety stuff. Finding an actual instruction is like finding a needle in a haystack. Here’s a link to it.

“Within hours from buying it and without starting it, we took it back to the Town and Country hardware store. They wouldn’t take it back. I was astonished.”

Dude, your issue is with the store!

“I thought the same thing but it’s not. I went to Stihl’s website and the OP is correct. What a mess.”

He bought it a T&C store. It is their policy applies.

“I did the post because I was utterly shocked that they wouldn’t take back the unused chainsaw and want others to “beware”.”

What is the store’s policy?

“Our local Ace hardware continues to treat you like a rank criminal on returns, but it is one mile away and HD is three miles away.”

Lowes is great, also. Worth driving the extra two miles.

My wife bought me a lightweight Stihl chainsaw

I never buy my wife dresses and she never buys me power equipment. We use the consultative process before treading into an area we are unfamiliar.

“What is the store’s policy?”

They would only exchange a Stihl item for another Stihl item of equal or greater value. I turned in the chainsaw ($200) and got a pruner+extra battery for about $200.

“STORE POLICY!”

From the Town and Country website:

“When you have an item to return or exchange simply bring in your original receipt, along with the item”

Sounds like they’re going to take it back, huh? Fine print says not necessarily so.

Did they inform you prior to purchase?

Was it on your receipt?

Did you talk to the manager?

Folks might wonder what’s so special about Elijah — that deplorable fellow out in the wilderness — that he could be the one to positively identify the Messiah?

Not complicated. He heard a stihl small voice.

“Did you talk to the manager?”

I think the manager was the one that “helped” us when we came back to return the chainsaw. He was not impolite but not sympathetic with our situation. I was not rude and when we settled on the exchange for the pruner I left and concluded “that’s life”.

I didn’t notice whether the receipt mentioned Stihl’s return policy.

FEEDBACK FROM TOWN & COUNTRY

Chris Depinto (chris.depinto@tchardware.com)
To:you Details

Hello,

When you purchase a Stihl power equipment product, it comes with a 7 day exchange option. This gives the customer the ability to make sure that they received the right product for their needs.

Any power equipment that has been used, is not eligible for a refund. However we are a servicing dealer and we will correct any issue that may be wrong with the product under the manufacturer’s warranty.

If you would like to provide a copy of the receipt or a phone number on the account, We will gladly get you in touch with the correct store manager for further assistance.

Best Regards,
Town and Country Hardware

“When you purchase a Stihl power equipment product, it comes with ...”

(Good news for all: someone at Town and Country corporate visits FreeRepublic!)

My wife bought it. I don’t know whether someone told her the exchange policy. My wife and I brought it back two hours after taking it home. I was utterly shocked to hear the exchange policy.

Yes it was “used” because the store person started it up for her for a reason that I don’t know. Did the store person say that once he started it it wouldn’t be eligible for a refund? I don’t know.

The reason for returning it was because I needed a pruner and not a chain saw. I have a chain saw.

It’s poor customer service that you didn’t take it back in this case. Yes the store would have to sell a “used” product at a slightly lower price. That must be a big deal.

The pruner I got as an exchange is great and turns out it was at a competitive price. By the way, the pruner is made in Germany which disagrees with the Stihl commercials.

Get me in touch with the store manager for assistance?? I think he’s the one that gave us the bad news. He stood his ground very firmly. Undiplomatically firmly. Maybe he thought I was unfriendly. Except for my expression of shock I was nice and submissive’

I think what’s needed here is not to focus on a single store, but for your national organization to instruct all of your stores to make sure customers understand the Stihl return policy. Actually that’a cop-out. It boils down to it’s each store’s policy.

Not a national chain.
