In all 38 member countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Reeves says there are now more young women than young men with bachelor’s degrees. Forty per cent of 18-year-old women in Britain head off to college, compared to 29 per cent of their male peers.
That gap is one of many warning signs of a male malaise, especially for boys and men at the lower rungs on the economic and social ladders. “Things are worse than I thought,” says Reeves, a senior fellow in economic studies at the Brookings Institution. “I knew some of the headlines about boys struggling at school and on campus, men losing ground in the labour market and fathers losing touch with their children. I thought that perhaps some of these were exaggerations. But the closer I looked, the bleaker the picture became.”
How bleak? Deaths of despair from drug overdoses, suicides and alcohol-related illnesses are nearly three times higher among men than women.

HEAL vs, STEM degrees.
Any idiot can get a Degree in a HEAL type of job. we see that all the time ever talk to a government administrator? That is generally a BA degree,
STEM degrees are much more challenging and require BS degree.
Don’t overlook the trades. My father insisted that I learn a trade before considering college. That is what our boys are missing. I apprenticed as a shipwright and worked at it professionally for a while. Then military technical schools, and then a Computer Science BS degree.
There isn’t a problem for me finding a job about anywhere.
At some point Companies will become desperate for POSITIVE RESULTS and start hiring/promoting base upon merit again.
Take a look at the percentages. 43% of either sex is entirely too high. That means there is a substantial number of intellectually inferior students. In other words, a high percentage of students fall within one standard deviation away from mean IQ. In other words, not college material. The figure for males is a bit more realistic.
College should not be for everyone. That notion leads to a lot of very dissatisfied people and is not good for business. There is nothing wrong with working in the trades or females working for a few years before settling down raising a family.
So if there are more male graduates, women are lacking opportunity. If there are more female graduates, men are suffering a malaise.
Sounds like an affirmative-action quota system is required to keep the balance perfectly even for the professional worriers.
They’re working on that. Every robotics and computer program in the state of Indiana is aimed at “closing the gap for girls in STEM” give them a decade and men will be out of those fields too. This not a coincidence, it is planned and being very successfully implemented.
“If fewer young men (then women) choose college, is that necessarily a bad thing? Maybe there’s more money in the trades.”
These days, if I were the father of college-age kids, I’d encourage to stay away from college and go into the trades, unless they wanted to pursue something in STEM. They can be successful and earn good money and not be saddled with heavy debt.
I’m in my 70s, I have a university degree, and I also worked in the trades when I was younger. But for the last 35 years of my work life I was in the corporate world. Though, I still did the majority of work on my house myself.
Everything worked out well for me.
But, that was a different time, and a different America.
In the USA, college football is the main source of revenue that supports ALL of the women’s programs. Title IX killed most of the other men’s sports program (besides basketball). The women can now get easy athletic scholarships, where they major in Queer Studies or Womyn Degrees. A lot good that will do them when they go out into the real world.
An absolutely marvelous book. It should be required reading for all parents. The problem was the Left used it as an instructional manual.
This article bemoans the fact that there are not enough men in Nursing & Early Childhood Education (ECE). While you can make good money in nursing, I don’t think the profession appeals to men in general. ECE is even worse. Not only is the pay very low, but any man in ECE is just asking to be accused of child abuse (or worse) if he does one off color thing.
And hiring Indians and other Asian because there won’t be any qualified Americans available.
“...men are certainly in the drivers seat in college when it comes to dates...”
You haven’t been on a University campus in the last 20+ years, I take it? A good percentage of young women in college become ‘wymyn’ in very short order, and are also LUGs. (lesbian until graduation).
If they are equal proportions in the future, it will do to quotas overriding merit.
“””Boys have been forgotten just like the angry feminists have the 60’s hoped.”””
Does anyone suppose that might be a root cause of young males committing mass shootings?????
Who wants to marry someone with a useless degree and a large college loan?
All the major US airlines now have flight schools for women and minorities. They hold their hand from first lesson to becoming first officer, including financing. United wants half its new pilots to be women and minority within a few years.
...and likely used and woke...no thanks.
Knowing what I know now if I had to make a choice today to go to college or go into a trade I'd go into a trade. Reason is the cost of college as opposed to the opportunity in major US corporation for white males (or rather the huge bias against them in hiring and promoting decisions). Now this is in an engineering firm so maybe it's different in finance but as a manager where I work I've been told informally (no paper trail and this was from a VP not in the HR org, for what that's worth) that if I have two candidates and one is a somewhat underqualified female or minority and the other is a superbly qualified white guy I should take the woman / minority unless there's some compelling defensible reason that his skills are unique or something. Being better isn't enough now, you have to be WAY better. No thanks, I'll be an electrician second time through life.
Get rid of WOKENESS in universities, and this problem will be solved!!!!
