What’s with the subzero temps in the forecast? The polar vortex, explained by a climatologist (only 8.11 years left)

DENVER - Bitter cold is in the forecast for Colorado.

The high temperature Thursday will struggle to surpass zero degrees, and wind chills could plummet as low as 50 degrees below zero in some parts of the state.

**SNIP**

Now that you’re braced for the arctic blast, we can turn to the question you may well be asking: How and why in the heck is it going to be colder in Denver than it is in Anchorage?

The answer lies in what’s known as the polar vortex.

According to the National Weather Service, the polar vortex is a low-pressure system that sits over each of the earth’s poles. We’ll focus on the North Pole, as that’s the source of the bitter cold headed for Colorado.

The “vortex” refers to the counterclockwise circulation of air around that system typically keeps the cold air contained over the North Pole. However, that vortex can expand during the winter and send some of that arctic air south toward the United States.

We spoke with Dr. Judah Cohen, a climatologist with Atmospheric and Environmental Research, to better understand these meteorological phenomena.

“When you get a disruption or weakening of the polar vortex, you tend to get an increase in the probability or risk of severe winter weather,” he told us on a video call.

Dr. Cohen likened this weakening of the polar vortex to the slowing of a spinning top. As it slows down, the top begins to wobble.

“The same thing happens with the polar vortex. When it's a nice, tight rotation, the cold is really kept close to that center of circulation over the Arctic,” he said. “When it slows down, that area kind of just expands outwards.”

Nice swirling air masses at the link. There's really frigid air at the north pole? Scientists may want to check that out. Merry Christmas!

“Climate change is the mass hysteria of our times.”

True. A mass hysteria that has spawned a new ‘religion’.
The Church of Man-Made Climate Change and as usual, the church’s high priest & elders are raking in the gold & silver.

Dad had an interesting story about the cold in the Colorado mountains little valley they lived in. It would get cold cold in the winter and the cold would settle down in the valley. 30 degrees below zero was not unusual. Then a storm would blow through blow all that cold air away and raise the temperature 50 degrees to around 20 degrees.

Seemed like a pretty straight forward explanation.

Climate change is the pyramid scheme of our times, with the American taxpayer holding up the bottom.

yep, it’s gonna get bitter cold here in Colorado ... for some strange reason, it seems to happen about this time every year ... this particularly event, though, is predicted to last only 3 days and 3 nights ...

I lived for several years in a little valley on a western slope in the northern Rockies and when we would get those sudden temperature rises it was pretty much a guarantee we would be buried in snow within the day

We’d also get weird inversions where the cold would settle into the valley and 5000 feet higher it would be 20-30 degrees warmer

Never totally adujiste to that

Yep - they scared a lot of people with their ‘reports and warnings’ - then they perfected the terror scheme with the plandemic.

It’s hard to pick just one.

You’re flying in a plane looking down on the fields or mountains or deserts below, before you go above the clouds...and realize how very small we are compared to the planet. Even if you have a bunch of polluted cars or factories down there, how much can it affect the climate or weather? Do we cause the temp
to be raised a millionth of a degree? Are we to blame?

The sea levels are rising so why did Obama buy a mansion on Martha’s Vineyard? Oh wait, maybe he solved the whole global warming thing. I live two blocks from the ocean. Nothing looks different. We don’t have six feet of water in the downtowns of Boston or NYC. We aren’t getting a huge increase in hurricanes. These megastorms are about as
frequent now as they were in colonial times.
How much do we affect the weather?

We’re going to run out of oil.
Millions will starve.
Killer bees are on the way.
Florida will get blizzards—no wait—
It’s the other way around.

“We could be seeing the end of snow.”
—New York Times Feb 2014
A year later the northeast got one snowstorm after another.

“Some numbers: Boston has already accumulated 96.3 inches of snow this winter — including a staggering 59.1 inches in February. The city’s now within 13 inches of the all-time winter record.”
—Vox, Feb 2015

Global warming..
Climate change..it’s all our fault..
Must change to electric cars.

I used to do a lot of flying and had those same thoughts while looking out the window at 35 thousand feet. I would see entire cities pass under me and see how tiny they were compared to the mostly empty landscapes around them.

What really struck me however were the massive forests that dominate the country east of the Mississipi and especially in the "urbanized" Northeast. For example, heading out of JFK in New York, once you pass the Jersey shore, you see almost nothing but dense forest all the way to the plains of the Midwest.

That really gives you perspective on just how rural our country still it today. Urban people tend to have a distorted way of seeing the world because they spend most of their time surrounded by concrete and buildings.
