I’ve never fished like that. Would he have been strapped to his line/pole such that he couldn’t disengage once he went overboard?

This is not the first time a tuna or billfish had pulled a person overboard trying to reel it in.

Sometimes you snag the tuna, sometimes the tuna snags you.

“Knittle is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and 185 pounds, with curly brown hair with a white mustache and beard.”
I doubt he still matches that description.
To: BenLurkin
I’ve changed my mind, they killed him.

Being strapped to your pole is NOT a good idea.

"..the friend attempted to jump in.."
This makes NO sense whatsoever. You either jump in, or you don't jump in. There's NO in-between.
How about "the friend declined to jump in"?
FOUL PLAY is worth investigating here.

Someday, someone is going to catch a giant tuna with some extra drag on it.

Wow! That has to suck. Could there have been a bigger fish following the tuna that decided the fisherman would do just as well for a snack? Or, did the tuna take take the man for a deep dive from which he couldn’t recover? Was he tethered to a pole so couldn’t release himself? I know nothing about tuna fishing, so have no idea.
