The flu season has been bad this year—and not just for people. Dog flu cases are on the rise in many areas of the U.S. this winter. In fact, veterinarians are suggesting that pet owners get their dogs vaccinated as soon as possible to potentially prevent this canine influenza.
It is also advised that if you begin to notice symptoms in your dog like lethargy or coughing bring them in for a check-up. Although there are several reasons that your dog may develop a cough, it could also be one of the symptoms of the flu and is worth checking out.
Nobody wants to see their beloved pet suffering from a virus. However, there are things that you can do to both prevent and treat this illness to get through the season with minimal distress...
Dog flu, or canine influenza, is a contagious respiratory disease in dogs that is caused by Type A influenza viruses specific to dogs. It's not the same viruses that are infecting people. According to the CDC, there are actually two strains of viruses that are affecting our furry friends—one is H3N8 and the other is H3N2. Dog flu can happen any time of the year and doesn't have a specific season like human flu. However, cases are surging this winter.
The symptoms of canine influenza are cough, runny nose, fever, lethargy, eye discharge and reduced appetite. However, some dogs won't show any signs or symptoms. The range of severity goes from no signs to severe illness that leads to either pneumonia or even death. If you are unsure if your dog has the flu or not, there are tests that can be done with a veterinarian to find out for sure.

There isn’t anything I need to know about dog flu.
Thanks for the information. We’d probably go for the flu shot, too.
Shaking my head. You dog people are nuts. Haven’t you learned anything from the last 2 years?
My monkey has the pox. Don’t touch my monkey.
A sewing friend of my wife’s lost her two-year old Sheltie to it last week. Dog started coughing on the way home from doggie daycare. By the time she realized how bad it was all the vets were closed and the local university’s animal hospital was closed until 7 AM due to a staff shortage. The dog died at 6 AM. She is devastated.
I wonder if Hillary Clinton is in danger from the dog flu? I certainly hope so!
With all the crap Bill’s brought home with his dalliances I’m sure she’d got all kinds of built-in immunity
Because genocide isnt enough.
I would have been devastated, too, so sorry to hear this.
One more indirect consequence of contraception and Covid-19.

Is anyone else sick of that phrase?
I take it to mean "Here's what you need to think".
Without PCR technology and the testing done at only Cornell University, I’m skeptical of any clinical diagnosis. Unfortunately the nasal swab has to be shipped to Cornell for a positive diagnosis and that may take over a week to ten days to get results. There are many vets making diagnoses by pulling them out of their butt. There are far more dangerous contagious diseases in dogs.
I’m just guessing. There was no formal diagnosis. I have never met the woman. My wife told me the story, and the next day I read about dog flu arising. It seemed like a logical conclusion.
Odd that your so incensed by my calling it dog flu.
Very odd.
What bothered me was my colleagues taking advantage of a situation using fear of a virus, fraudulent tests, without confirming a diagnosis correctly and using a "vaccine" that was not adequately tested for efficacy. They preyed upon the ignorance of their clientele for financial gain. Do you see any similarities within the human medical community? Those that advise caution were vilified as was I. Dog "flu" is an infection with a Orthomyxovirus with hyaluronic acid and neuraminidase markers unique to canines.
All I know is one of my wife’s sewing friends lost her two-year old Sheltie to a respiratory event hours after picking him up from doggy daycare and she is heartbroken.
The next day I read about dog flu and came to a not unreasonable conclusion.
