Richard Belzer, a comedian known for his role as cynical “Law & Order” detective John Munch, has died at 78 — his last words as edgy as his long career: “F— you, motherf—er.”
Belzer died early Sunday at his home in the South of France, his pal and writer Bill Scheft told The Hollywood Reporter.
The actor played the role of Munch on multiple shows, including “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Law & Order: SVU,” and had cameos in other shows like “The X Files.”
“He had lots of health issues, and his last words were, ‘F–k you, motherf–er,’” Scheft said.

St. Peter at the pearly gates?
As part of the hype for the first Wrestlemania, Hulk Hogan and Mr. T appeared on a talk show Belzer hosted at the time. Belzer told Hogan to put a wrestling hold on him. Hogan put him in a “sleeper hold.” He then let go of Belzer, who collasped on the floor, hitting his head. Belzer subsequently sued Hogan over the incident. If this was a “work” (Like Jerry Lawler and Andy Kaufman) it was very convincing.
Lots of people in this thread upset about his last words, while their words are in the same vain.
A lot of hatred going on here. Just saying, that’s a bit hypocritical.
I also don’t believe this article. A bunch of actors and writers and other crazies said he said those final words. Lets not believe everything we read or hear anymore, ok?
We go on about how everything the media says is a lie, but believe the next article we read.
I don’t know Richard Belzer at all. But I can say he was active - always dedicated to the craft and never really sitting on his laurels.
“F— you, motherf—er.”
Hell, I say that all day long in this reign of Biden!😎
Gerald Fried died recently.
He had some good music.
He did some “Star Trek” episodes.
HULK HOGAN,RICHARD BELZER, MR T- INFAMOUS ACCIDENT LIVE ON TV 1984
His head sounds like a cantaloupe when he hits the floor.
Mr T: "That's all right. He's just sleepin'." LOL
“Especially the SVU version.”
I liked the original OK, and I did like the one with what’s his face, but I hated SVU. I completely swore it off after one very lurid episode, and later found out a co-worker had done the same after the same show.
Great job, writers & producers, make an episode of your show the actively drives away your audience. You know if there’s two of us, there are actually a lot more.
But, I did like Richard Belzer well enough. RIP!
“The Belz “
Welp, RIP.
left winger to the max
I felt that Belzer thought the sleeper hold was fake, and asked Hogan to put the hold on him.
How "edgy" is saying F bombs as you die when it's the same tired F bombs you've been saying your "long career"?
Sounds predictable and stale to me.
Dude! No one ever died until covid jabs were invented. Jeez. Get up to date!
RIP Richard Belzer. I saw him at the Comedy Store in LA back in 1982. Time flies.
I would have expected a little more eloquence from a former stand-up. Anger issues?
Not exactly the language one expects of a christian being ushered into the presence of his Savior.
I liked the first five or so seasons of L&O, Michael Moriarity was my favorite ADA... and I still have a crush on Jill Hennessy. After that the stories started repeating. Never liked SVU... I may have watched one episode. Belzer was good on Homicide.
Raquel Welch, Stella Stevens, and... Richard Belzer?!
I remember his stand-up act. What a piece of filth.
If you like Jill Hennessy you should watch “City on a Hill”. Kevin Bacon is the lead and Hennessy is his wife. Very adult show, but everyone in it does a great job.
