A history of gout is associated with an increased risk for benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and Meniere disease, according to a study.
Hyo Geun Choi, M.D. and colleagues examined the impact of preexisting gout on the occurrence of BPPV, Meniere disease, and vestibular neuronitis in a retrospective analysis conducted using 2002 to 2019 Korean National Health Insurance Service Health Screening Cohort data. A total of 23,827 patients with gout were matched with 95,268 controls.
The researchers found that compared with the matched control group, the hazard ratios for BPPV and Meniere disease were 1.13 (95 percent confidence interval, 1.06 to 1.21) and 1.26 (95 percent confidence interval, 1.15 to 1.37), respectively, for participants with gout, but the hazard ratio for vestibular neuronitis was not significantly increased (hazard ratio, 1.06; 95 percent confidence interval, 0.93 to 1.21).
"Our study is meaningful in revealing that BPPV and Meniere's disease are novel comorbidities associated with gout," the authors write. "Thus, controlling gout will also contribute to lowering the risk of comorbid diseases such as BPPV and Meniere's disease."

Yes, such as the allopurinol I take but will that eliminate the co-morbidities?
Yes...and every human is different chemically so no doctors really know how to treat gout. It’s a case by case basis. What kills me (almost literally) is the pharmaceutical companies (government) have spent millions of dollars perfecting pain killers so they’re not addictive and when I have a gout attack, i.e. it feels like someone is driving an ice pick through one of my joints, I cannot get pain killers.
Drink cherry concentrate in water, available through King Arthur Flour and elsewhere.
Basically cherries however you can get them.
You would have to drink a LOT of martinis to get enough, so maybe not that way.
Also, cherry pie filling works, but too much sugar.
Gout is caused by Uric acid.
And high levels of uric acid causes Metabolic Syndrome.
There are supplements available to reduce uric acid.
And there are videos on youtube that explain how uric acid functions in the body and why too much causes metabolic syndrome.
There are also devices similar to blood glucose monitors that can measure uric acid in the blood.
Drink BUCKETS of water.
Flushing your system with water will dilute the uric acid.
No need to eat tart cherries, allopurinol works perfectly (no attacks in 15 years).
Gout is one of the trickiest maladies to treat because there isn’t consensus on causation. What causes the body’s inability to filter uric acid? It’s progressive, so it can’t be hereditary; but it could be damaged DNA.
Dr Joel Wallach says liver. Others say kidneys. Allopathic practitioners say it’s metabolic/hereditary.
Keep your eye on Dr Eric Berg (DC) on YouTube, he acknowledges the lack of consensus and is at least trying to think through the problem from a naturopathic/integrative angle. He also has some protocols— and he teaches better than anyone I have seen.
“No need to eat tart cherries, allopurinol works perfectly (no attacks in 15 years).”
steve86 is CORRECT!
Used to have SEVERE disabling gout attacks. Indomethacin to stop the pain (inflammation) clear the joint, then allopurinol to PREVENT almost all gout attacks.
If a particular food aggravates YOUR gout (they are different for everyone) consuming large amounts of such food may trigger a minor gout attack even on allopurinol.
In my case it is Jalapeno peppers which I love.
Indomethacin is the miracle cure for a gout attack.
Allopurinol is the miracle preventer of gout attacks.
With these two drugs, gout will no longer be a problem for you.
What NOT to eat to avoid gout and what TO eat/drink to relieve gout are different for everyone. I tried ALL of them (NONE of them worked) before discovering (by my doctor) Indomethacin and Allopurinol.
I’ve have BPPV for years and have never heard this before. Wonder how crystals in the inner ear has anything to do with gout? I don’t even know symptoms of.
I agree with everything you said.
It was cashews that had been triggering my gout attacks (before allopurinol). Took me five years to work up the courage to eat even one more cashew once I realized that. Now, I eat a moderate number with no problem.
In the old days I used colchicine to treat attacks with moderate success.
bkmk
Tart cherries
As one who is debating taking Allopurinol, I looked into the successful studies with tart cherry juice, and the effective dose was 24 ounces a day.
Seemed to much for me to be able to follow successfully. I like variety in my fruits!
For me, one to four tablespoons in water a day, or around 25 cherries does it.
