NSIDC Antarctic Daily Sea Ice Extents Sets New Record Monthly Lows for Both January and February 2023
NSIDC Sea Ice Index ^ | 01 March 2023 | Robert A Cook PE

28 Feb 2023

Be aware that both the Jan 2023 and Feb 2023 Antarctic Sea Ice Extents have set new record lows for Sea Ice Extents.

Each day in January was lower than all previous years sea ice extents, and (now) February's Antarctic Sea Ice Extents have been released. They too were lower than all previous years of the satellite record period (1978-2023.)

The NCIDC Sea Ice publicists will certainly report this event.

But.

What the NSIDC and other Global Warming publicity boards will NOT mention is the ever-increasing, all time record-breaking HIGH Sea Ice trend around Antarctica from 1992 through 2015-2016. Several times in 2013 and 2014, in fact, the excess sea ice area (not sea ice extents) around Antarctica was so large that the anomaly exceeded the entire area of Greenland.

Background: Sea Ice is measured by satellites as two measurements: Sea Ice extents is the amount covered by at least 15% of the oceans surface: So isolated ice floes and drifting icebergs are registered. Sea Ice Area is that ocean area covered by at least 85% local ice. SO Sea Ice Area is always smaller than Sea Ice Extents, but is a year-to-year more consistent value. Regardless, either can be used as long as you (or the person you are talking to) are consistent. In earlier years, when satellite orbits were harder to control near the pole, Sea Ice Extents were (slightly) more accurate since the whole region around the North Pole that could not be surveyed were just assumed to be solid ice. Now, polar orbits and satellite scanning equipment is better.

But.

The actual measured Global Average Temperature by satellite for all the earth's regions - seas, swamps, savannahs, deserts, tundra, prairies, farms, forests, ice caps and mountains - was -0.04 for January 2023 (compared to the 2000 baseline temperature.) The rolling 13 month global average temperature at the end of January 2023 was only slightly higher at 0.14 degrees above baseline.

Key words and tricky phrase of the day after 48 years of "Catastrophic Global Warning":

"Today's college students now have never actually faced any global warming in their entire lifetimes." Since global satellite measurements began 44 years ago in late 1978, the actual measured Global Average Temperature has increased 0.45 degrees C.

Less than 1/2 of one degree in 50 years.

Sea ice extent is not a very useful metric, as it is mostly dependent on prevailing wind and ocean currents pushing the ice around on the ocean surface. The implication of course is that this is due to “climate change” but there is no reason to believe this.

Undersea volcanoes are the main culprit. Just plug them, problem solved [/S].

All: Now, we can’t really argue about this specific Antarctic Sea Ice Extents (Area went down as well) - The change happened, let us see what happens next.

BUT.

Up north, the Arctic Sea Extents (and Sea Ice Area) also decreased measureably from their measured high in 1982-1983 timeframe down to 2006-2007 timeframe. Yes, there was a definte change from 1983 down to 2006.

But, you see, from 2007 through now 2023 - a full 1/3 of the entire satellite record - there has been NO CHANGE in Arctic Sea Ice Area! (The very slight increase from 2007 to today’s value in 2023 can be either ignored as a statistical insignificance, or can be waved like a red flag in front of the propagandists. Your choice. )

Al Gore finds Arctic Sea Ice to be an Significant Inconvenient Fact.

Oh. By the way. Continued loss of Arctic Sea Ice from today’s area only means more heat energy is lost from the newly exposed 4 degree Arctic Ocean surface to the -35 degree Arctic air over the fall, winter, and spring months than is gained during the very short mid-April to mid-August days when the Arctic sun actually is shining over the Arctic Sea ice.

Antarctic sea ice is much further from the South Pole than is the Arctic Sea Ice from the North Pole. So more sunlight could be available down south during their summer months of Dec-January-February when Antarctic Sea Ice is melted. But the Antarctic Ocean cloud cover is near-100% with many months of daily storms and near-hurricane force winds, so the annual effect is muted.

Sunken: I’ve got some plots and graphics of these trends if you feel they should be posted here.

I like these maps better. We were supposed to be ice free by now. So the “warmers” said 20 years ago.

I am practically a vegetarian, because I mostly eat animals that are vegetarian (cattle are vegetarian, but pigs will eat anything).

True that. Then there are studies in Antarctica of ikaite crystals showing the temps there during the Medieval Warm Period were higher than now.

Global Warming is true, and it is happening fast!

It is in the mid 80s here this afternoon, but it was only in the 60s last night. Proof positive of Global Warming!

The sea ice index is problematic. I learned of this when I people were surprised that there was massive sea ice coverage when the arctic areas were supposed to be unusually warm:

The sea ice index does NOT measure how much of the sea is covered by solid, unbroken ice. Rather, such indices measure the area of the sea covered by a certain proportion of sea ice. (Not sure if this is a 25% or 10% index.) Anyway, thing is that the warmer it is, the more the ice breaks into pieces and floats away from the permanent ice pack. The colder it is, the more the ice remains in a tight, solidly-frozen area relatively close to the core of the permanent ice pack.

You need to look at both separately: The screaming hysteria about Arctic Sea Ice was ESSENTIAL to creating the “Polar Bear Panic!” attacks begun by Al Gore in his first 2000 - 2010 Global Warming propaganda campaigns.

Melting Sea Ice Panic Headlines feeds the “MELTING ARCTIC CRISIS by ignorant public and even more ignorant politicians and news propagandists - which can then be blended into the CATASTROPHIC SEA LEVEL RISE! (not affected by Sea Ice at all - but who can let a (nearby) crisis go to waste?

So, the 1980 to 2007 CONTINUOUS Arctic Sea Ice CRISIS (as it was actually decreasing) caused the now-infamous “Arctic Sea Ice will disappear by 2013!” headlines, right?

Yet, since 2007, Arctic Sea stopped decreasing! Has not decreased since 2007. So, Arctic Sea Ice was “phased out” . We stopped hearing about it. The NSIDC and their labs and scientists kept getting funded, but they were publicized much since 2016 to 2017.

During this period, remember Antarctic Sea Ice had been rising.

Year after year, the Sea Ice around Antarctica was increasing so much that the daily Sea Ice Area Anomaly around Antarctica several times in 2013 and 2014 exceeded the ENTIRE AREA of Greenland. Yes, there was more “excess sea ice” around Antarctica than the entire area of Greenland. (Kind of makes their frequent “iceberg the size of Manhattan rather puny, doesn’t it?)

This positive trend of ever-increasing Antarctic Sea Ice was so great and so long-lasting than, in 2014 and 2013, we predicted (not too humorously) that the Straits of Magellan and tanker route around Cape Horn would be blocked by Antarctic Sea Ice sometime in the 2025 to 2028 timeframe. Thus, of course, the potential Northwest Passage become vital, doesn’t it?

So, back to today’s (upcoming) headlines of fear and dismay about “Vanishing Antarctic Sea ice”. They ignore the Antarctic when it was inconveniently increasing in recent years, they publicize its loss when convenient. They publicize Arctic Sea Loss trends when they decrease, but ignore the same trend when it is steady for now 16 years.

Yes - It may seem like we jump from pole to pole. So what? That is where the data is. Do not ignore what is convenient to ignore.

“If it weren’t for my food, your food would have no poop to grow in.”

The funny thing, when you ask an organic-only vegan how they would grow organic produce without livestock manure, they answer the livestock could be kept like pets, no meat or dairy products, manure being their only product. Ha ha! Can you imagine the price of manure in such a scenario? And the price of their food? If such a Lalaland were ever to exist.
