Andy Kaufman is set to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2023, Variety has learned.
Kaufman will be inducted alongside this year’s fellow honorees that currently include Rey Mysterio and The Great Muta.
Kaufman is best known for his career on the stage and screen, most famously starring as Latka Gravas in the hit sitcom “Taxi” from 1978-1983. He made his mark on the world of professional wrestling, however, when he declared himself the Inter-Gender Wrestling Champion of the World, offering money to any woman who could pin him as part of his act. This famously led to a feud with fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler in the Continental Wrestling Association in Memphis, TN.
Despite Lawler and Kaufman being friends, they successfully convinced the audience they were bitter enemies. Kaufman claimed that Lawler broke his neck when Lawler performed a piledriver on him, with Kaufman appearing in a neck brace thereafter. The two made an appearance together on “Late Night with David Letterman” in 1982, during which they traded insults before Lawler slapped Kaufman, knocking Kaufman out of his chair.

“never “got” his style of comedy, sorry”
$$$$$$$$$
...and that was the point of his comedy.
Some of the funniest stuff is from Taxi, where they hired Andy’s alter ego Tony Clifton but Andy made part of the contract that they could never be treated as the same person.
Listening to Danny Devito and some of the crew talk about how confusing Andy made things was hilarious.
He never once told a joke. He was a song and dance man.
The cocaine cookie episode was great.
Will he be there in person for the ceremony?
If THIS doesn’t bring Andy out of hiding, nothing will.
He died in 1984, of lung cancer, according to IMDB.
“Now Andy did you hear about this one?”
I watched 3 Andy Kaufmann movies one day on a VCR and the new girlfriend with me swore it wasn’t driving her nuts and she pretended it was all just fine.
It's enough to make one wonder...
Awesome screen name! I had a printout of that verse hanging in my office cube decades ago when I worked at a university. That was back when they'd get mad enough to argue but not destroy your life.
He might be on a beach somewhere with John McAfee.
link doesn’t work
He once did a stand-up bit where he opened a book, I forgot the name of it, but it was one of those War and Peace type books, and told the audience he was going to read from it. The audience laughed, and then Kaufman literally started reading from the book and the audience started booing. Yeah, he was a bizarre comedian. Jim Carrey nailed him though in the biopic and should have won the Oscar.
Maybe Tony Clifton will be there instead.
