Due to Russian law against the LGBTQ+ community, Buffalo Sabres defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin - with the support of his teammates - has decided not to participate in Monday's "Pride Night" against the Montreal Canadiens.
Lyubushkin will dress for the game, but will not take part in the warm-up, where the Sabres will be wearing Pride jerseys.
Lyubushkin lives in Russia during the offseason, and he fears for the safety of his family from the Russian Government. This is an issue the Sabres players have talked about as a team. Head coach Don Granato says he was not involved in those discussions, nor did he think he should have been.

Every time I watch the Stars, it is some sort of “appreciation night”. Last game is was the Indians. At first, I thought native peoples. Before that, it was fag night. “Let’s raffle off the smelly rainbow jerseys and sticks for some miscreant cause.” I am losing patience.
I guess the only viable way not to participate in such activities in America any more is to claim Putin made you do it.

To be fair to Lyubushkin, the entire Sabre team should sit out the pre game warm-up. Or, better still to take part in the warm-up without the Pride jerseys. The statement by the team is more than enough.
