NATIONAL GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH DAY
Each year, National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day on April 12th recognizes one of the top comfort foods in the United States. Why wouldn’t it be when we’re talking about bread grilled to perfection, and warm, gooey, melted cheese.
#GrilledCheeseSandwichDay
According to food historians, many cultures around the world have enjoyed cooked bread and cheese since ancient times. The United States modern version of the grilled cheese sandwich originated in the 1920s. As sliced bread and American cheese became easily available, Americans began making open-faced grilled cheese sandwiches.
United States government cookbooks describe Navy cooks broiling “American cheese filling sandwiches” during World War II.
Grilled cheese sandwiches are versatile thanks to the ability to mix and match cheeses, bread, and seasonings. Adding sauteed vegetables or herb-infused oils can elevate this simple comfort food to a whole other level.

A. A deep-fried grilled cheese sandwich (yes, there is such a thing) is called a Cheese Frenchie (or Frenchee).
Q. What’s the best way to make a crispy grilled cheese sandwich?
A. Grilled cheese is so delectable-crispy buttery toast on the outside, soft, gooey, cheesy center. How can you improve on that? Well, swap the butter for mayonnaise. You’ll get a crisper, more flavorful, golden-brown exterior while keeping all that gooey goodness in the middle.

That was last month....................
Well...I made 2 lbs of meatloaf yesterday. Guess what kind of sandwiches I’m having today...and tomorrow....and the next day. I’ll freeze the rest.
I’m still celebrating national beer day.

Damn! I miss everything that counts.
Grilled cheese with ham and caramelized onions.
Hold the onions.......................otherwise yum!..................
And I was wondering what I would have for lunch. Problem solved. Bread, butter, cheese. I can’t wait.
Certain Freepers swear that mayonnaise instead of butter produces a better grilled cheese.................
The cheese does sound delicious. “Caciocavallo podolico tastes like parmesan and manchego had a baby, but it melts like a munster. It instantly makes sense as the cheese of choice for the most expensive grilled cheese money can buy.”
And the bread! Don’t forget the bread! “The sandwich is served on made-to-order French bread which is made with Dom Perignon champagne and has edible gold flakes baked into it.”
And the slathering of butter, mmm mmm. “The bread is slathered with white truffle butter and brushed with white truffle oil — which has gold flakes mixed into it — before being grilled.”

My dad did that. I think we’ve had this conversation before, too.
I’ve never had mayo on a grilled cheese, but I have used BACON Drippings!..................
I had a croque monsieur once, and it was divine.
Basically a ham and Swiss type of cheese open faced melted on a fresh French baguette. Totally incredible and worth every calorie to the point that I still think about that sandwich frequently.
