Don’t underestimate the power of a steam engine. The modern aircraft carrier is still steam-powered. It just has a nuclear fire box (and steam pressures up to 1200 psi).
Up until WWII, torpedoes all were steam-powered, and they were far faster than the steam, diesel and electric vessels they were employed against.
