Number of Virus Outbreaks on Cruise Ships Surging: CDC
The Epoch Times ^ | Jul 13 2023 | Jack Phillips

Data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that incidence of a common stomach illness is on the rise on cruise ships.

In an update posted several days ago, the federal agency is now listing 13 outbreaks of norovirus on cruise ships this year, which is the highest number of outbreaks recorded on cruises since 2012. The most recent reported norovirus outbreak was on June 20 on a Viking Cruises ship in which about 120 passengers and crew members reported being ill out of about 1,200 people who were on board.

Viking Cruises recently told The Wall Street Journal that it believes the viral outbreak “originated from a shoreside restaurant in Iceland where a group of guests dined during their free time” rather than from someone on the ship.

There were only four norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships during all of 2022, even as demand for cruises surged after COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.

Federal officials estimate that norovirus infects between 19 million and 21 million people each year on average.

Norovirus is one of the most common viral illnesses on cruises, and it has sometimes been dubbed “the cruise ship virus” owing to widespread media coverage of outbreaks. However, the CDC noted that outbreaks on cruise ships account for a small number of all reported outbreaks of norovirus in the United States.

Cruise ships have ALWAYS been known as floating petry dishes. Some are just better than others.

Norovirus, commonly referred to as “the stomach flu”. We've all had it.

What is the difference between a cruise ship and an office building..or a school?
One is on the ship for 4-7 days the other is in the building year round.
I never understood this argument beside the fact that some People have a serious bug up their ass over cruise ships...
Ever see a report of a norovirus outbreak at GM headquarters?
Google main facility?
USC dorm buildings?
Apparently it only happens at sea..

48 cruises under my belt, never got sick with anything.
Actually always disembarked stronger from availability of highly nutritious food and enhanced opportunity to exercise.

Most of the sanitary issues stem from the passengers, not t he crew. For example, taking food with their hands from the buffet and then returning it uneaten. Or, the passengers using her finger to sample the gravy on the buffet. If the crew is notified of such they will remove the food from the buffet but many passengers fail to inform the crew.

The cruise line employees stand at the entrances encouraging passengers to wash their hands but most passengers ignore them.

I forgot to mention the attitude of certain passengers, similar to that of some here on CC, which is a refusal to follow health mitigation rules. The “I paid for this cruise and I’m not going to be confined to my cabin.” attitude.

Just wanted to share a review I just saw ...

We love to cruise but not under the current wokeness.

Carnival Paradise Review
Don’t go.
Review for the Western Caribbean Cruise on Carnival Paradise
Sail Date: Jul 2023
Cabin: Ocean View
Chose this cruise because it fit the schedules of 4 adults. This is an older, smaller ship, but the ship was in good condition. The crew was professional and very service oriented. The food was good, especially considering the number of meals being prepared. The cruise is seriously overcrowded. Yes, cruises are crowded, but this one seemed to be more so, perhaps because of summer and more than two people in multiple cabins with families cruising. The pools were literally standing room only. Long lines at the buffets. There were large numbers of unsupervised older teen youth onboard and in the cabins. I suppose their parents were somewhere onboard but definitely not supervising them. There were multiple incidents of physical fights and passengers were threatening to beat up and assault their cruise companions. Passengers were making racial slurs to other passengers. The unsupervised youth in the cabins were loud at night. Vulgar language was the norm. Security broke up fights and asked passengers to be respectful, but they had no way to manage the behavior of the guests. There is no way for passengers to call security directly. You need to call guest services- push several prompts to eventually be put on hold, before finally reaching security. Despite the hard work of the staff, I don’t see how anyone could enjoy this experience. It is extremely overcrowded and unsafe. Definitely no place I would recommend taking young children. Believe me, even if you have already paid, just stay home.

Wokeness has nothing to do with the description of this cruise.
Carnival Paradise is a smaller ship. It’s summertime. It’s four or five day cruise with very cheap rates. These are ‘booze cruizes’. No wonder this cruise is over-crowded with rowdy passengers.
No way I would book such a cruise. Nor would I book on Carnival. Especially when schools are out. You want cheap, this is what you get.

My wokeness note is directed at the indicated LACK OF POLICING and security. Not cheap anymore. $500 a night per person for a balcony.
That 4 years ago was $100.
