Pope says ‘backward’ U.S. conservatives have replaced faith with ideology

Pope Francis has blasted the “backwardness” of some conservatives in the U.S. Catholic Church, saying they have replaced faith with ideology and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time.

Francis’ comments were an acknowledgment of the divisions in the U.S. Catholic Church, which has been split between progressives and conservatives who long found support in the doctrinaire papacies of St. John Paul II and Benedict XVI, particularly on issues of abortion and same-sex marriage.

Many conservatives have blasted Francis’ emphasis instead on social justice issues such as the environment and the poor, while also branding as heretical his opening to letting divorced and civilly remarried Catholics receive the sacraments.

Francis made the comments in a private meeting with Portuguese members of his Jesuit religious order while visiting Lisbon on Aug. 5; the Jesuit journal La Civilta Cattolica, which is vetted by the Vatican secretariat of state, published a transcript of the encounter Monday. During the meeting, a Portuguese Jesuit told Francis that he had suffered during a recent sabbatical year in the United States because he came across many Catholics, including some U.S. bishops, who criticized Francis’ 10-year papacy as well as today’s Jesuits. …

Francis has exchanged the truth for a lie... and he worships the creature rather than the Creator.

I am not a theologian. But, have often heard, that God’s word and Jesus’ teachings are unchanging, and not subject to change as appears to be the view of this Pope.

Is there room for new interpretations of Scripture? I am not a theologian so can’t comment on that. But on what basis does he say the theology can just change to accomodate homosexuality and global warming or anything else?

There is no “new interpretation”. What Scripture plainly says, it plainly says. There are several warnings about trying to change the words, in the text.

Just another in a very long line of rotten placeholders of the position.

What’s next - yet another re-write of the Bible?

(spits) and I’m not even catholic....

Well, we do oppose open borders which lead to human trafficking.

But what am I saying, we all know how the Church loves them some kids to abuse.

"...and that a correct understanding of Catholic doctrine allows for change over time."

Same ideology that the U.S. Constitution is a living document, and subject to changing interpretation. Go crawl back into the socialist hole you crawled out of Mario. I don't recognize you as my Pope, and never will.

Sadly the church has damaged itself so badly i think they think a new stream of worshippers…. When in reality the folks the Pope is defending here want nothing to do with the church. So when comments like this come up , the church simply hemmorages more churchgoing folks who see the pandering for what it is.

Trying to blame the shift on normal folks portrayed as extreme conservatives is just politics.

Our pastor did a QUICK thing on the Ten Commandments - he was more talking about the Israelites leaving Egypt and becoming free. (Slaves have one set of rules, free people have a new set of rules. To keep them free.)

Anyway, he talked about not taking the Lord’s name in vain. To paraphrase:

“I know a lot of people think it is about using four-letter words - well it’s not. No - you can’t all start using them now. But it is about ascribing something to God that He hasn’t said or commanded, or that is written in Scripture. Preachers do it all the time. Politicians, everyone. But it is twisting God’s truth to fit YOUR truth, and claiming that it is from God.”

To go along with that, in other sermons the pastor has mentioned numerous times that when we read something in the Bible (or preached from the Bible) that makes us squirm, well maybe the image that we have in our heads of God, isn’t the true God of the Bible.

And I don’t know if I’ve heard him preach on it, but I would add that stuff in the Bible that we have to jump hoops around to try to explain to fit our “theology” probably isn’t a correct theology.

“Well those guys that wanted to rape the man isn’t about homosexuality, it is about kindness to strangers.”

Our understanding of God can grow—guided by the Spirit. He promised the Spirit to guide His Church in all truth and it’s an unfolding revelation. What can’t happen is to change prior dogma and doctrine. To do so makes the Spirit fickle and inconsistent. What was true is true or it never was.

The Church taught us to read Scripture under Her tutelage. To now change some fundamental teachings is damaging beyond measure.

We are not the Church of Climate Change. Stick to our relationship with God.
