San Diego woman spends more than a week hospitalized following routine dental visit

I just don't want this to happen to anyone else

...

Traci Parker left Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego on Tuesday after an eight-day stay. She was forced to undergo surgery for a severe infection after what should have been a routine dental visit.

...

her doctor didn't listen to her concerns.

"It's been really hard on me," Parker said. "If I had not gotten treated when I did, I could have gotten septic."

Her ordeal started back on August 3 when she went in for the first of two appointments to get a crown. She was in pain after her appointment, she said. It continued to worsen as the days passed.

“I called the following week, the 16th, and said my pain is getting worse. I feel like it's infected. I feel like there's something else going on besides just crown pain and she said you probably just need a bite adjustment,” .

...

"I asked that dentist, 'also can I please maybe get some antibiotics, I feel like there's something else going on,' [but] she declined and gave me some Tylenol cream instead. But then by that Sunday the pain was so bad that my entire face hurt," Parker said.

...

Carmen Balber, executive director of Consumer Watchdog, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization, told CBS 8 Parker's story is not uncommon.

...

Parker, who has a background in nursing, hopes her story will not only help other patients who feel unheard, but also serve as a reminder to physicians.

"I just urge physicians and dentists to listen to their patients when they think there’s something else going on. Listen to their patients because I shouldn’t be in this position just because I'm getting a crown put on," said Parker.

What, does she think she’s a doctor now?

Any procedure done by doctors, except psychologists, is at risk of infection. And anything short of an STD should be a possibility.

I am interested to know what the doctor had in mind with not better investigating the pain complaint. But that’s the quality of doctor selected by the patient. Good doctors normally don’t pass off a report of pain. And as a nurse, she should have known better.

I wonder if she is taking treatments for osteoporosis.

People taking osteoporosis drugs have a slight risk of developing a serious infection of the jawbone, called osteonecrosis. Because of this risk, persons about to be given osteoporosis drugs have to be screened and cleared by a dentist. Even with the screening, the need for dental work can arise during osteoporosis treatment, meaning there is always a risk of osteonecrosis.

“What, does she think she’s a doctor now?”

So a doctor is the only one who knows if a tooth hurts or not? Is it their tooth? How would they know whether it is or not if it is someone else’s tooth? Is a person so stupid they don’t even know their own tooth hurts?

Really?

Tell you what... If I had not raised hell with arrogant egotistical negligent incompetent doctors I would have lost my Dad prematurely twice, and my wife once.

I was right, doctors were wrong. And only because they absolutely would not acknowledge or even listen to our concerns about the symptoms. In their minds humans are just stupid cattle with zero intelligence as far as they are concerned. May as well go to a veterinarian instead.

her doctor/dentist is an A-hole and completely negligent

7 years ago, I had an infection that went on for 3 months. I was taking antibiotics but, the pain was debilitating.

The entire right side of my head was in pain, felt like there was a fish hook in my throat, etc.

I finally went to a DDS and informed him I didn’t care about dying from sepsis if the tooth were pulled.

I was already dying and would pull it myself if someone didn’t do it for me.

I was warned what would happen if I pulled it and told him I didn’t care

He pulled it and I felt great in one day.

The vet is likely to listen to you.

And the medications cost a fraction of what they do at the humanoid pharmacy.

“What, does she think she’s a doctor now?”

Well, since doctors have lowered the bar to the point anyone can google better answers than what the medical professionals provide, yes, she is a doctor now as we all are now doctors.

Yep, there is truth in that...

Aside from the fact that the multi discipline medical industry is now designed to eventually KILL YOU. But they try and keep you just from the verge of death and stretch it out as long as they can to make as much money as they can before finally bleeding you to death slowly.

The object of this very real conspiracy is to keep you in perpetual poor health needing repeat care in one direction or another continuously until it finally kills you.

I was being sarcastic, although, we do now have a supreme court justice who can’t give a definition of what a “woman” is.

I had to ask my dentist for a prescription for antibiotics. I knew I needed them, but he would have let me leave the office without even suggesting it. My pain was gone in about a day.

That is the failure of joint replacement tech. I was going to get a knee replaced. After agreeing to it and getting into the “next day” planning I got extra paperwork from the ortho surgeon’s office — he never mentioned this. So, a replacement is prone to infection since there is so little blood flow into the joint the body cannot easily patrol for bugs. So, every time I would be scheduled for teeth cleaning I’d have to start antibiotics 3-4 days ahead of time. Any other pathway for infection is ignored, just dental work.
But, with so little blood flow into the joint the antibiotics don’t always have enough support from the immune system. If you get an infection you have a few days to get a low success injection of antibiotics into the joint or arrange either a knee replacement or amputation.

Uhh, I’d rather limp.

Joint replacement is a scam, like tranny surgery.

I have a wonderful dentist. A 50 year old crown is starting to give me trouble with some swelling and sensitivity. I called the dentist and asked for an antibiotic in preparation for my dental visit next week. He called it in right away. If you live in the Tulsa area, and need a good dentist, see Dr.s Lowe, Do, or Nguyen. Also, their crowns are a fourth of what everyone else charges.
