I know it seems surreal, but this episode seems prophetic.
When I was a kid scenes of victory and defeat and the battlefield in Vietnam were seen on tv.
Heck even World War I, had film footage of the horrors of war.
This war nothing.
God Bless the souls lost in the line of battle.
Mods pull at your discretion.

One of the best and — yes — prophetic of the ST-TOS episodes.
Along with The Cloud Minders and The Conscience of the King. All applicable to what we see today.

It’s an awesome episode. One of the best ever of all Trek. Great acting! People would just walk into the disintegration booth without any fear or defiance. It should have one an Emmy.

IIRC Kirks’ “solution” was a physical fight between the two opposing leaders so they could feel the pain of real conflict and maybe stop the virtual war....doubt it work...and dreams like this must not pass on...

People would just walk into the disintegration booth without any fear or defiance. Yes, that really gripped me as a kid, having already heard about the holocaust from my uncle.
It was explained that they went willingly, believing it was their duty as citizens, in order that the great works of their culture might survive.

Scotty was at his best commanding the Enterprise. He defied the pacifist Ambassador to lower the shields. Then he moved the Enterprise out of orbit and told Anan 7 that all cities had been plotted and programmed into the ships weapons systems and that the entire destruction of the planet would be initiated in one hour.

To me, their is only 1 Star Trek, although DD9 was the best of the non TOS Star Trek's.

Scott: Aye. The haggis is in the fire for sure, but I’ll not lower my defenses on the word of that mealy-mouthed gentleman down below. Not until I know what happened to the captain.

Speaking of which, a comparable episode in DS9 when Bashir & Dax discovered a planet by tracing a distress call. The people there defied the Dominion in years past and had been left a parting gift of a deadly disease being genetically programmed into them which was slowly killing them off, whittling down their numbers year by year. When it struck the victims were resigned to their fate, would be taken to a 'healer' to be euthanized. No hope for survival of their demoralized culture until Bashir came up with a way to beat it.

Yeah, if I recall the point he made was,
what culture? They were stagnant, with their lives revolving around that stupid 'war', and being comfortable with it. Past time to put an end to it, move on and forward.

Yes, that really gripped me as a kid, having already heard about the holocaust from my uncle. It was explained that they went willingly, believing it was their duty as citizens, in order that the great works of their culture might survive. When the Enterprise becomes a victim in the computer simulation and ordered destroyed, Kirk decides it's time to show them exactly what war means
Which actually is corespondent to one of the reasons why capital punishment in the Bible under Moses was usually by communal stoning. Besides corresponding to the crime being against the whole community, and giving them a better sense of justice, it helped impress upon all the gravity of the offense, versus antiseptic execution.
